Bill on LGBTQ2S+ students debated

By Tim Giilck on April 11, 2022

The legislature continued to debate a private member’s bill calling for the Education Act to be amended to provide more protection to LGBTQ2S+ students.

The debate happened last Wednesday, occupying much of the afternoon. The bill had been introduced by NDP MLA Emily Tredger.

“I am so proud of the students and advocates who have worked to make this happen,” Tredger said. “I was disappointed by some of my colleagues’ comments, and disappointed that an amendment was brought forward that weakened the available support for these initiatives.

“However, this bill is too important to be delayed, and today we were able to move it one step closer.”

That amendment was requested by the Yukon Party. Party members wished the bill to be sent to a committee for further study, but the amendment was defeated by the NDP and Liberals.

In a news release issued last Thursday, the NDP stated “in the weeks since the bill was introduced in the legislative assembly, the Yukon NDP has been hearing from students, parents, and teachers about how important this bill is.

“Creating and having access to safe spaces would make a huge difference in the lives of many LGBTQ2S+ students in their schools.”

The bill, the NDP noted, “received letters of support from All Genders Yukon Society, Yukon Association of Education Professionals, and Queer Yukon.”

Even though the Liberals voted against the Yukon Party motion, Tredger wasn’t pleased with some comments from them.

“However, not everyone approved of the bill as it was written,” she noted.

“Liberal and Yukon Party members spoke at length about the need for more extensive consultations – suggesting that students should continue to wait for more supports while the government holds meetings about what is best for them.”

So where will these sensitive students go for security when they are out of school living and working in the real world? A thicker skin works more effectivly than protectionist social policies, and you can take it with you wherever you go.

@Farley
No-one can argue that how we view others is predicated on perception. Yes you are correct in saying it is about attitude. To use your own words "this group" does not need anymore protection than anyone else in my opinion. That is what is leading us down the path, as John puts it, to a segmented society. We have lots of laws in place to protect "everyone" regardless of who or what they represent. All children, and adults, deserve equal protection, and not elevated for some over others. You are not tackling the issue of your own argument of "attitude". Changing people's attitude with laws, is over and above what is currently in place (which already protects everyone) and really is an over-reach.

The essence of your argument implies strongly we should provide special protection for anyone or group of people who feel they need to have special protections or consideration.

What makes the BLTGQ2S5GWTF+ students special? ALL students, regardless of their cosplay proclivities, should be equally protected. The NDP need to expand their focus to the whole alphabet of "I'm different treat me special" kids.
If it's taxpayer funded then it should be equal protection for all.

i want more protection for the fat kids, the one with glasses, and, uh, maybe the one with curly hair. All bullied...no separate safe space...
NDP, don't you care about them?

Anie; nothing needs to be fixed other than attitudes; no one is harmed either financially of physically by insuring there are protections in place to prevent violence/death for this group. As we can see the rise of the American Taliban in Florida, Texas, Georgia Canada as a whole needs to prevent this spread of hate.

@Anie You are wrong. The PPC and Max Bernier are more than willing to address this problem. And here at home in the Yukon, we now have the Yukon Freedom Party which I'm led to believe has a similar stance to the PPC on most issues. So don't give up hope!

This comment section is exactly why we need these supports. Suicide rates are higher for kids who identify under the rainbow umbrella. But I guess none of you care about that because you assume YOUR kid won't be impacted. I hope none of you experience the loss of a child because of this and that's not how you learn how important it is.

I wish we could force all of our politicians to read. John's post of April 13. I wish we could have it pop up in their calendars at least monthly. With plain language and few words, he has captured both the cause of so many of our problems, and the solution. Trudeau keeps saying "diversity is our strength". He is wrong. Our emphasis on diversity is our weakness, it's why we no longer are encouraged to celebrate all that is good about Canada. Sadly, I see no politicians on the horizon with the backbone to fix this

@ John - words of a man I would be happy to go grab a coffee with anytime. You must be part of our colourful 5%. You heard it here folks, "We are all, in essence, different". Does anyone question if there is hatred in such words? I don't, because there isn't, that it the opposite of discrimination, it is acknowledgement and respect. Differences should be celebrated not the catalysts of competition to cover up rampant Candian classism. .

A little bit of research I find fills in the blanks for most things. It's sad that most Canadians do not know how their governments work and the rules they are obliged to follow while performing their work on our behalf. I suspect some politicians are grateful that the great unwashed are not as informed as they should be. However the Yukon's Legislative documents and processes are well covered and just a bit of time reading and you too can better understand how democracy is supposed to work, despite the occasional run into the ditch.

Sadly the persistence to divide peoples into camps based on whatever is the theme of the day will only serve to the division instead of unity. Time and again around the world we see where pocketing people does little to create a health discourse and environment where everyone feels the need to be treated with equality. Fracturing our society into groups with different rights over others only serves a self interest or worse more disharmony in society. We are all, in essence, different. It is delusional to think that our difference should be used as a wedge. Yet I believe that is exactly the fall out we see. Stop cutting the pie into segmented pieces and removing them - you are creating more harm than good.

It’s too bad these people don’t have anything else to identify themselves aside from their sexual orientation.
We have actual problems to deal with, aside from some insecurities these teens have. It’s going to be a long road in life if they already need a closet to cry in.

You can read the Bill here: https://yukonassembly.ca/sites/default/files/2022-03/35-1-bill304-act-amend-education-act.pdf
Remember what was proposed in the Bill may not be the end result following debate in the House.

MLA Tredger: Yukon NDP will be hearing from voters, not that you care since the NDP doesn't have a chance to form a government in its current ideological form. Just look at the number in the last election. Stay tuned.

I guess we know now where Ms Emily Tredger’s priority lies and it is NOT in the job creation for all Yukoners, but in the LGBTQ2S+ and all its future mutating variants.

@ Sarah Davidson - no parent myself, but it seems to me, if they were still teaching critical thinking in school this would either have already been resolved or would have been contended right out the gate. That neither has happened is worth much consideration by everyone.

@ Jake - I am old enough to remember this and you speak true. He did have a record for that, which showed me circa 2015 that his son was never to be voted for. I regret nothing in my informed votes. The only thing I do regret is that we don't "force" this government to play by the rules. We are well past legal patience in enduring this invalid "so called" or "self-styled" government that I do not recognize as the leadership of Canada. Who would, not a single god damned Canadian voted for this "alliance of shame". To say so would be to suggest I could have voted Conservative/Green. I couldn't, last I checked. Nobody else could either. We would need electoral reform to recognize such a government.

School, like life, has never been a safe space. To suggest that one particular group now needs what you have never provided all groups participating in education in our institutions of learning belies the very little learning being done in our educational systems. I got beat up in school for being short, poor, white, having a name...

What kind of society are we creating when we are all asking for safe harbour from each other from a government that has no business trying to parent us? This said, I in no way discourage this discourse, I merely suggest, like racism, sexism, etc. - isms - that it be a discussion worth EVERYONES TIME AND EFFORT.

Pierre Trudeau wrote that "...anytime any group of people obtains special rights or protections, it comes at the expense of the whole society...", and he actually had a record of fighting against the idea.
I know this is beyond ironic, more like unbelievable, but then his son didn't inherit his intellect. Look into it, I was surprised too.

This might be very good, but I am not sure. I have to ask what the details are in this bill. Why isn't the public told what this bill entails? Are we just supposed to say " oh it is for LGBTQ protection" so support it, but we are not supposed to know the specifics? Why is that?

How much can we bend over to support a small amount of people and promote what they seem to think they are entitled to. Sends the wrong message to the young.

I really hope at some point we get back to the basics when it comes to education. Math, science, history, etc., etc. Our students in Yukon are not being prepared to enter the harsh world that is out there.

“Creating and having access to safe spaces". So, the alphabet community has to have their own places to congregate. In other words, they want to segregate themselves from the straights. Hmmm, got no problem with that program. But my problem is trying to understand why they believe they need to be separate. Can't they relate to the straight community? And of course, when the conservatives want to discuss it to see if it contains discrimination, Tredger - the queen B is afraid to do that, because it might hinder her agenda. And one more thing, she says Yukon NDP has been hearing from students, parents, and teachers about how important this bill is. Could she please tell us what side of the gender sphere she was hearing from? Because it makes everyone think that it was also from the straight side. But, of course this is just typical deception and non transparency from NDP and Liberals.

Up 78 Down 9

Sarah Davison on Apr 11, 2022 at 5:40 pm

What do Whitehorse parents think about this? A lot of parents are sick and tired of the promotion of gender ideology in schools. Schools exist to teach reading, writing, and arithmetic and to help students learn how to think well. They're not there to promote ideological perspectives, or to overrule parental guidance in the home. If kids are being bullied at school, then the school has an obligation to deal with the bullying, rather than allow an ideologically motivated group to exploit a problem in order to promote a niche political agenda.
