Association recruits former mayor
Former Whitehorse mayor Bev Buckway is the Association of Yukon Communities’ (AYC’s) new executive director.
Former Whitehorse mayor Bev Buckway is the Association of Yukon Communities’ (AYC’s) new executive director.
Prior to joining the AYC, Buckway served as executive director of the Yukon Agricultural Association.
Before that, she was the mayor of Whitehorse for six years (2006-12) after serving one term as a city councillor.
“Ms. Buckway brings to the position the unique combination of non-profit experience, entrepreneurship, and municipal service that will assist the AYC and its membership,” Wayne Potoroka, the AYC’s president, said today.
“We are eager to see Ms. Buckway’s positive contributions and enthusiastically welcome her to our association,” added Potoroka, who is the mayor of Dawson City.
Buckway, an original Yukoner, holds a master of arts in professional communication from Royal Roads University in Victoria.
Many Yukoners know her through her work on numerous boards and committees.
Buckway replaces Paul Gudiatis, who spent three years as the association’s executive director but has left the territory.
Buckway also spent four years as president of the association while she was mayor.
Buckway said today she was drawn back to the association through her love of municipal affairs and the people involved.
“It is such committed group of people who are sincerely out to better their communities,” she said. “It is an attractive group to work with.”
The association represents the eight incorporated municipalities and five associate members which include the four unincorporated local advisory councils and one First Nation, the Kluane First Nation.

"Faceless" And most of the people posting here are also faceless. It's a meaningless insult.
As for those decrying Whistle Bend, I've been here 35 years and can remember all the naysayers
"No one's going to live in Granger, it's too far away"
No one's going to live in Takhini North, too many people too close together"
And remember the cries of distress when the trailer park went in next to Northland because after 2 yearsfew of the lots were sold. Looks full now.
And now Whistle Bend. How many houses have to be built there every year before it's considered a success? Every time I go past there is new construction and more houses occupied. Some people are obviously thinking it's a good idea.
And later Bev can have all the glory for thinking it up and implementing it without any help from anyone because June said it's all her doing!

I have an opinion that says...associations in general much like many special interests,
which often are one in the same...should be disbanded, discouraged and disliked.
Think about it folks, years ago when we were permitted to form our own thoughts/ideas...were those times not freakin' awesome?
Now it seems we have been programmed to believe that associations, special interests, steering committees are far all knowing then we mere peasants. Thus we need consult (nanny state windbags)...nearly everyone of them seeking permission to live our life and build our houses and communities?
I say BS to that philosophy, and encourage others to give thought to the origins of "the nanny state". The epic pile of pure crap excreted from said minions/administrators of said special interests and associations.
...jus' saying? And now an article full of accolades...from an epic EPIC fail.
WOW...just wow...is my take on it, and we wonder why things devolve as the have?
Good for AYC...I guess, looking forward to her input to spread from this clearly infected sty, to "communities" she will now represent....yaaaaaay!!!!!!

There are very little incentive for communities to belong to this association. The cost of membership never, ever amount to any kind of support or services from them. Some communities can hardly afford it. It is also in my view, a mouthpiece for the government, where clues are taken to water down reported issues communities deal with. A self serving association where most pat each other in the back for doing very little.

@BnR, being sarcastic about someone's opinion only helps stifle people from offering their viewpoint. If you were only entitled to offer an opinion if you aspired to be a politician, what kind of world would that be?
I don't know that you can blame Buckway solely for Whistlebend, but she was mayor and she set a tone. One of the worst elected officials I've ever had to pay attention to, due to the way she fawned over and catered to administration, encouraging their excesses while she patronized and insulted the people she was supposed to represent. Her views on her role as an elected person were extremely regressive. So as executive director of the AYC -- no thanks.

So June, Whistle bend was all Bev's doing? The other councillors, all the business' that clamored for more land and the complete backing of the Yukon Party had nothing to do with it getting approved? Please, ignore all the other factors and blame it on just one person.

BnR: So.. evidently a Buckway supporter? but you didn't mention a single good thing that Buckway did while she was in office. Having nothing to say positively, you go after me? That is an asinine comment.. I never said I could do anything better.. I said she did it poorly.
Once a person enters the public arena, any and all are free to comment on that performance. That is one price people pay for their choice of employment.
I think everyone should comment on everything they are able to...politicians read these forums and perhaps get a feel for what the public would like to see happen in the communities. A comment like yours is wasted, it doesn't help anyone shape an opinion, but had you said.. Ms. Buckway did this, that, the other, her new employers might read that and think wow..we are so lucky to have attracted this employee. If everyone would write in, everyone post opinion, everyone comment, perhaps slowly we could make a better community, a better political environment.
I challenge you to write in a post : June, I disagree with you completely... while Bev was Mayor of Whitehorse she....... and Whistle Bend wasn't the financial disaster you refer to because..............

He is kidding right?
I don't associate experience with successfulness. I thought she was an abysmal failure as a Mayor. Don't know how her performance was measured at the Agriculture Association but she wasn't there very long.
Of course.. I apparently don't forget all that easily when it comes to my wallet and the lack of money in it.. still remembering it was Buckway and Whistle Bend.
