By Whitehorse Star on February 8, 2021

Angela Drainville, a community volunteer and occupational health and safety professional, is seeking the Yukon Party nomination for Whitehorse West in the upcoming territorial election.

The riding is held by Liberal cabinet minister Richard Mostyn.

“As a struggling single parent for many years, I came to the Yukon because it promised a better life for my family,” Drainville said today.

“Yukon gave us the opportunity to thrive, and I am eager to give back to the territory and my community by serving as a progressive and compassionate voice for hard-working Yukoners in the legislative assembly.”

Drainville has decades of experience in culture and tourism, along with a career in occupational health and safety.

She works with both the private and public sectors as the general manager of Outcrop Yukon and as an occupational health and safety educator at the Northern Safety Network.

She has also worked with the MacBride Museum and the Miles Canyon Historic Railway Society, where she managed both the Copperbelt Railway and Mining Museum and the Whitehorse waterfront trolley. That tourist attraction stopped operating several years ago after the Yukon government withdrew funding.

Drainville recently managed the Atlin Arts and Music Festival, and worked with the board of the Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival prior to its cancellation in 2020.

She has also helped organize and run the Winterval Santa Claus Parade in Whitehorse for the past six years, and has delivered many other live events in the territory.

Drainville is the president of Music Yukon, and the president of the Yukon Convention Bureau. She is also currently the past-president of the Canadian Institute for Theatre Technology (CITT/ICTS), the treasurer for Whitehorse Independent Theatre, and serves on the boards of directors for Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous Canada, and ArtsNet.

Drainville also has a heart for youth and children’s issues, and has been a vocal advocate for youth education. She is the vice-chair of the Porter Creek Secondary School Council, and the vice-president of the school’s grad committee.

As well, she founded and leads the Yukon Theatre for Young People Society, a cost-free theatre program dedicated to offering live performance opportunities to Yukon youth.

“We need a government that empowers all Yukoners to feel that they can contribute to the ideas that will ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for all people in our territory,” said Drainville. “We need action now, as the next generation is counting on us.

“I am a believer in open communication, and collaboration, and have modeled this value throughout my career and in the volunteer roles I’ve held,” she added.

“I have worked with people of all backgrounds and political affiliations in order to produce the best outcomes for the territory, and I will continue to hold myself accountable to that standard if I am the successful nominee for Whitehorse West.”

She and her family have lived in the riding since 2014.

Drainville has also served on the boards of Borealis Soul, the Yukon Historical and Museums Association, the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Society and the Canadian Association for the Performing Arts.

In support of her eldest son and other Yukoners living with epilepsy, Drainville founded Epilepsy Yukon after moving to the territory from northern Ontario.

She studied law and political science at Ottawa’s Carleton University before leaving to complete a law clerk diploma at Algonquin College. She also has a Certificate in Cultural Planning from UBC.

On Saturday, the Yukon Party’s nomination process opened in Porter Creek Centre, Porter Creek North, and Mount Lorne-Southern Lakes. The nomination deadline is Feb. 20.

Today, the nomination process opened in Porter Creek South and Riverdale South, with the nomination deadline set as Feb. 22.

The party now has 12 ridings open for nomination. Leader Currie Dixon is the confirmed candidate in Copperbelt North.

Based on her constant bouncing between organizations and jobs, she looks like someone padding their resume for a national run.

Oh 'June' when has your vote ever been any different? Your straight negative to the core so don't think your fooling anyone here.

@Leon

Your comment is rather confusing so perhaps it was intended for someone else?
Either way I'll answer you. I don't care what the Liberals or NDP or anyone defines the Yukon Party as. I'm just telling you that it used to be conservative and now it isn't at all. Currie has made it very very progressive from everything I've seen so far. If you can't see that, then I don't know what to tell you.

Of course Sandy isn't paying anyone to make comments. It was a joke, but looking at the comments and assuming that some have been planted by Liberal staffers isn't really conspiracy theory material, "bud".

Vaccines work, climate change is real. Don't lump me in with the nut jobs just because we don't agree. I keep my tinfoil on my leftovers, not on my head.

This election, for me, might end up being about voting someone out.. rather than voting in. I know that the Federal Liberals have got to go.. every last one of them. Territorially, the Liberal party has made a poor showing.

Not very many left here who remember 1982. But, there was no gravy train. The Yukon Inn had a sign up saying, "Eat here or we'll both starve". Caravans on the highway of people leaving. Think it can't happen again? Canada, federally and provincially, is almost 2 trillion dollars in debt. How long do people think that can go on?

For all the haters on this conversation; look who you are defending. Mr Mostyn has an interesting record to defend. Ms. Drainville has been nothing but honest and has an impressive resume.

If the Liberal Staffers are writing those comments I feel sorry for them. They have 16 hour days for at least 4 weeks coming, no thanks and at the end.. no job or worse the same old old. They face a pretty strong glass ceiling.

Hi Adam Smith, I think you have bigger problems. No volunteers, no message and the fact Currie is demonstrating the Yukon Party is not what the Yukon Liberals define it to be.

It isn't 2016. Got my popcorn. Will enjoy this sequel.

@Pokemeinthearm

bahaha - yes you got me and probably others. I'm a paid Liberal schill unfairly targeting the innocent Yukon Party and I get paid per comment. I mean if anybody dares to oppose the Yukon Party or call them out on their shady business they MUST be paid to do so. No other person would ever do such a thing.

Maybe take off the tinfoil hat bud.

@ "True Yukoner" - The Liberals are the change. Voting in the Yukon Party again would be a return to the past. Before this government we had 15 long years of them. Even their current leader Mr.Dixon was a former Minister along with Cathers, Istchenko, Kent, McLeod and Hazard. So a vote for them is a return to the shenanigans of the past.

Wow great candidate for the new Progressive Yukon Party! Big member of the Arts Community, the music community and a certificate in cultural planning! Just the type of candidate that real conservatives are looking for. Luckily you managed to somehow steal her from Kate White and the NDP.

At this rate Currie will have successfully purged every ounce of conservatism from the Yukon Party in about a month or two. Likely just in time for what appears to be a looming election. Which is fine by me. I'll be happy to stay home this election day. If you win though Currie, can you please change the party name to the Progressive Yukon Party? It's not nice to mislead people and pretend to be conservative.

Previous southerner here - I recall her from a few years back when she tried to sue an Ontario municipality for wrongful dismissal and then dropped it. Town stated she didn't work well in government. Look it up.

I smelled the YP permeating the air in that FB group when it first started. Obviously she was getting fed info from YP insiders to pour gas on an already tough situation. Unreal!

Science denying and as mentioned below using our kids as political pawns.

There is a certain admiration I have for a mob, with its ability to turn a narrative on a dime... via a loonie.
I have no drama font option my minions, so just close your eyes and as "WE"...imagine your leader addressing you people...unplug your brain and follow me. Cherry or Grape Kool-Aid for everyone, drink up peoples.

Clapping as seals is highly encouraged, and yell all others outta your collective safe zone...we are entitled to our entitlements and superior cognitive abilities
being on full display. Our friends at the CBC do as much as they can, but with solid minions as I read here in this forum of common people, defending logic and inclusion at all costs.

To fulfill our UN objectives we must STAMP out all those dissenters, haters, and critical thinkers...can infect a whole ideology undermining the good and virtuous projections. For complete harmony, unity and inclusivity these bad ideas and very bad (not us types) people must go.

Lot of YLP love in this comment section. Does Sandy pay you all per comment, or is your payout based on upvotes?

Maybe you should get together and make sure you're not making the same negative comments as each other about this YP candidate. You just sound like Liberal cabinet ministers regurgitating their poorly constructed talking points.

Now we can all see all the liberal staffers have nothing better to do then cast shade on someone willing to speak out when thing are not right.
Please stop with the BNR junk get over yourself, we need good people willing to make positive changes. No matter where and how long they have been in the Yukon.

It’s look like this Candidate has done more for the Yukon then most BNR people.
Let’s be nice to people and support them instead of trying to knock them down. No matter what party they run for.
We need change!

Wow. I believe this is the same woman who started up a facebook group to attack the government on everything Education related. I believe its main focus was to get all students back in school full time, pandemic or no pandemic. It's now obvious she was using that group to raise her public profile in order to run for office. That was a pretty sneaky move. She should have definitely been upfront with people in the group before using it as a proxy to attack the government and garner support for Currie Dixon. She just posted a letter he wrote on the main wall and thanked him for it. It's so painfully obvious what she was doing now in hindsight. No shame apparently.

That resume is almost enough to make me vote for Wade. Keep it coming, YP.

Stick to the fundamentals. Capable people motivated to solve problems. Don’t underestimate the transnational nature that grounds politics. Demonstrate clear financially viable paths to strengthening and adapting the core public institutions Canadians rely on. Keep the saviour stuff in a corner for now. Say high to your neighbours.

Talking points:
-Telemedicine investment
-Broadband for all
-Education reform and modernization
-Paperless government
-Ombudsman cooperation
-Long-term electrical solution
-Whitehorse General Hospital
-Water resource protection
-Youth alcohol treatment

For the sake of the territory’s future, please don’t try to sell us on the railroad. It's a loser. A money pit to hide executive bonuses while the project goes from frothy boom to carbon tax bust. If it’s all their money, whatever. None of ours, okay?!?

I am pleased to see someone running with the scope of experience Ms. Drainville has in the volunteer sector. The Yukon would be much worse off without the many programs and services provided by Yukon's dedicated volunteers and NGOs. It's time they got the recognition and support they deserve.
Best of luck to you Ms. Drainville!

Anything, and I mean ANYTHING, to dethrone the Liberals and their socialist agenda. The more tried and true old school conservatives the better but I will take anything over the communist policies the liberal regime is trying to force on us. Very supportive of Angela's run for the seat.
