Appointments recommended for inclusivity advisory committee
The city has identified eight individuals to sit on the new inclusivity advisory committee.
The city has identified eight individuals to sit on the new inclusivity advisory committee.
The names of the eight were presented to council in an administrative report at Monday night’s council meeting.
Administration is recommending the appointment of Shonagh McCrindle, Ramesh Ferris, Nancy Kidd, Stace Bernard, Pawan Bhardwaj, Christina Zahar, Bill Burton and Sharlaina Bain to a two-year term.
The city will also appoint two non-voting administrative staff to assist the committee.
Council will vote next Monday whether to bring forward the bylaw required to make the appointments.
Council is also being asked to revoke the appointment of David Irvine on the land development and housing advisory committee and confirm the appointment of Tiffany Eckert-Maret to take Irvine’s place for a two-year term.
The purpose of the new inclusivity advisory committee is to focus on issues related to inclusivity and diversity within Whitehorse, says the administrative report.
“The scope of work and mandate of the committee will be defined by council,” says the report.
“Administration will work with the committee to develop an agenda, work plan and budget for the first year.
“Within the first year of its mandate, council will expect the committee to present recommendations regarding means to improve social inclusion and encourage diversity within the City of Whitehorse with specific focus on city programs, services and responsibilities.”
The report says a number of topics and subject areas are included in the terms of reference and mandate for the inclusivity advisory committee to consider and report to council on.
These include:
• Identify opportunities to increase inclusivity through city bylaws, policies and programs;
• Advise council on the implementation of the Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities toolkits and resources;
• Make recommendations to council on strategies and initiatives to provide an inclusive, diverse, positive and healthy environment within the City of Whitehorse and our community;
• On select topics, hear and respond to delegations of representatives from community and cultural groups, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and individuals;
• Advise council on the inclusiveness and effectiveness of existing programs and services; and
• Examine any inclusivity issue that council refers to the committee for consideration.

Hey Anie...as a participant that does disagree with you periodically?
Not today, your humorous and cynical participation today is well...hilarious!
Please, carry on.

I agree with Sylvie, there should be a francophone on this committee.
Its difficult to tell from names on the list, but there should be representation for Filipino Canadians, Francophones, at least 2 First Nations representatives , both male and female seniors, a Jewish person, and a person of Muslim descent.

Wait - Is this committee inclusive? There is no evidence, yet, that it includes short people, tall people, left handed red heads, twenty- somethings with thin hair, 6 toed females, dog owners, non pet owners, myopic seniors, hard of hearing millennials, acne scared 50 year olds, sibling deprived of any age, twins, the balding, the already bald, people with no rhythm, folks who are tone deaf, I could go on and on. In good conscience, committee members should resign immediately and insist that replacements be truly inclusive. We are building a convention centre that should be large enough to accommodate everyone at first meeting.

...and pray tell what makes you or your friends so special? Not everything is about having the francophones in everything that is done. Best get use to it - every other group does; AND if they don't, well they will just have to suck it up.

@no wood for you john on Dec 6, 2022: SWFCGLRS - you may have just created another alphabet group. Now, all we need is a flag, and a street intersection to have our colours painted for recognizance. Now that's what I call inclusivity.

You are very right Bill. The NDP'ers in this territory are so far left they make the Liberals look conservative for crying out loud. What a waste of money this ridiculous committee is.
Sylvie Binette if you are concerned about the lack of Francophones on the committee, talk to NDP Councillor Michele Friesen whom you are always praising. I'm sure she can help you out.

For those with mobility issues, including my gramma and aunts, try CLEARING THE SNOW and ENFORCING THE SNOW CLEARING REGULATIONS. Don’t pay lip service to accessibility, JUST DO IT. Start with the basics. This is just more paying off the usual disability heroes to pretend to care.

I've lived here for almost 45 years now. Between this kind of shyte, I feel sooooo out of sync with this place I once considered home-for-life.
But since I'm not FN and not an immigrant and not a refugee and not a politician... will I, a mere white heterosexual person be included in this committee's thought processes? Because I sure don't feel included in much these days.

What good news! Everything in Whitehorse is going so well that Council has come up with this nonsense. Can't wait to see what they achieve. Guess Ferris has run out of celebrity photo ops, so now he can preach at the committee level. Yawn.

With all the major, and far more important issues, this city has to deal with their "waste" money and time on wokism. No wonder nothing "real" gets done. This endeavour will not produce anything of value except chest thumping. What complete and utter nonsense.

Why not treat ALL people as equals? Perhaps it is because when divided into seperate groups people are easier to pander to? Much of the alphabet is used to identify some kind of individual bias of gender identification or similar sensitivity, why not add the rest of the missing letters to the list and treat us all the same?

Reading off the names I was taken back as it reads more like a NDP Christmas party invitation list. What a way to back door even more of the socialist agenda on to the rest of us.

Never did I imagine as a Yukoner that the day would come where because I am a straight white male the government apparatchiks here would see me as the enemy to be discriminated and worked against as hard as they can.

Very disappointing to not see a francophone on the Committee, considering previous work from l'AFY at developing relationships with the City and long presence of francophones in the Territory (1830-70 + or -). As a longtime citizen I consider it quite an oversight.

Well meaning but completely unnecessary with a good council.
Cannot wait to see good recommendations from the new committee which the City then ignores due to hidden agendas.

Never forget. A mayor who garnered 13% of the eligible vote is imposing this BS on 87% of us. Still feeling your city works for you? Simple math doesn’t think so. Here’s to the real fringe minority trampling the majority underfoot yet again. Shame on the people who have accepted these appointments, which are on their face not merely wasteful, but divisive and counterproductive, as well. You’re being used in return for a stipend and some catered meetings.

You know beyond any doubt that there is to much unnecessary, top heavy, useless bureaucracy in place when government bloat such as this committee happens.
