Alaska Highway collision led to injuries, closure, RCMP say

Two people were rushed to Whitehorse General Hospital for injuries they suffered in a serious traffic collision Monday evening on the Alaska Highway near Porter Creek.
At approximately 9:23 p.m., the RCMP received a call about the collision, which involved two vehicles on fire, police said Tuesday afternoon.
First responders attended to extinguish the fire, assess injuries, and temporarily close the highway to ensure the safety to other motorists.
Each vehicle had one occupant.
“At this time, police cannot share information about causes. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor,” police said.
After the fire was extinguished, the portion of the Alaska Highway from Wann Road to Centennial Street was closed for several hours.
This allowed for the icy conditions on the roadway to dissipate, and let the Yukon RCMP traffic analyst to attend and review the collision scene in a safe environment.
The road was fully open by 5 a.m. Tuesday.
“Police appreciated co-operation from the public in avoiding this stretch of road while first responders were on scene,” the RCMP said.
