YP Leader Currie Dixon,

‘Action for a Change’ is Yukon Party’s theme

The Yukon Party (YP) has released the first parts of its campaign platform, and it’s clear the party has its sights set on what it calls the shortcomings of the Liberals.

By Tim Giilck on March 15, 2021

The Yukon Party (YP) has released the first parts of its campaign platform, and it’s clear the party has its sights set on what it calls the shortcomings of the Liberals.

Currie Dixon, the YP leader, held a news conference this morning to tease the first items the party will be campaigning on.

The theme of the YP campaign is being called “Action for a Change”.

“This election is going to be about who Yukoners trust to have a vision to lead the territory out of this pandemic and into a prosperous future,” Dixon said in his preamble. “The Yukon Party is ready to move forward with clear, decisive action for a change.”

Dixon said the party would provide Yukoners with a “path forward” out of the pandemic and into an economic recovery by focusing on economic recovery, supporting Yukon families, and safe and growing communities.

“It will be based on a foundation of good governance,” he said. “This action plan is comprehensive, and contains bold and fresh new ideas to lead the territory into the future.

“In the short term, we need to ensure our small businesses can survive. Our action plan will establish certainty and provide supports leading to recovery.”

Dixon also promised he would work with Yukon health officials, such as Dr. Brendan Hanley, to provide a plan to move forward out of the pandemic, and ensure it establishes benchmarks so the public can easily follow the process.

“So that you, your families and your businesses have a decisive path forward for a safe re-opening. This will ensure certainty for Yukoners, and a way to ensure decisions are done in an accountable and transparent way.”

Dixon said the party would also “simplify and streamline” existing support programs.

“I’ve met with many businesses, and the common theme is confusion over the overlapping programs. We will establish a one-window program.”

Dixon said as well the party would offer increased limits for those programs.

“The current practice has been to announce small extensions, so the government can call more press conferences and make more announcements and more opportunities for headlines,” Dixon said.

“We will extend the programs for a year.”

Dixon also said the party, if it forms the next government, would start working on a bid to host the 2027 Canadian Winter Games in a bid to jumpstart tourism.

“That’s going to unlock Yukon’s future as a sporting destination,” he said.

Dixon said he believes the government budget, as it stands now, has the flexibility to handle the increased spending.

“We think it can be done within the existing resources of the department,” he told reporters after his announcement.

When questioned, Dixon didn’t comment directly as to whether this campaign is moving the YP closer to the centre of the political spectrum, nor on the irony of leading a “conservative party” campaign on the basis of a fresh new approach and the voice of change while accusing the Liberals of looking to the past.

“I think Yukoners are looking for a decisive path forward, and that’s what we’re offering,” he said. “We believe we have that vision to offer to Yukoners, and we have the team to do it.

“No government wants to provide the type of support we are doing right now. The problem is that government-imposed restrictions have created a tremendous burden on our private sector, and we think as long as those restrictions are in place, we need to provide supports to get through this.”

Other highlights of Dixon’s announcement include:

• Extend the 25 per cent discount for liquor licences for one year and amend the current program so that it applies equally to all licensees throughout the territory;

• Work collaboratively with the business community to address the rising cost of insurance in the North;

• Immediately enhance and accelerate the distribution of tourism relief funding by increasing the amount per year by 50 per cent;

• Creating a brand-new fund for tourism product development and existing project rejuvenation.

• Work with the tourism industry to highlight to Yukoners all the economic and social benefits the industry provides to our community.

Indeed time for a change, what about getting rid of 75% of the useless bureaurats who are just waiting for their pension? What about the NWtel subsidies for a monopoly/Cartel? Etc. What about doing something for the PEOPLE for ONCE!!

Yes, let’s dredge up whatever we can such as the golf course and the peel. But nobody seems to think anything of YTG awarding a 45 million dollar contract to build a health centre in Old Crow 1 day before the call of the election. Even though it was only budgeted 38 million. You think someone would have adjusted the specs to find savings, or awarded it to the company that bid 38 million. I guess we can say that seat has been bought and paid for.

You keep bringing up the Golf course and the Con bailout... what you fail to mention is that THIS guberment (Sandy Silver) wanted to give them an additional $1.9 million for sprinkler upgrades. So if you're going to complain about wasted money why not add this...or is it because it was a Liberal bailout it's fine?

I wish we could modify the posted signs for each party.

NDP Slogan - On your side unless your in a suit.

Liberals Slogan - let's keep going into debt.

Yukon Party Slogan - Action for change backwards.

All the parties suck and the worse part is, colour changes, but the scum on the bottom continue to thrive. I rather try and shove sprinkles up my nose, than determine which jackpick should be the next premier. One slogan we can agree on.. Politicians are in it for themselves.

Larry must have been heart broken when he found out you did not really support him in the last Federal election. Can he count on your support in the next election if there is one? Liberals have done a budget in 700 days and don't plan on calling an election.
Just keep on governing with no authority.

Currie is simply stealing the Liberals platform and just committing to going further with it.

- The Libs will bailout Tourism with corporate welfare. Currie has committed to supercharging the corporate welfare and saying he will find the money "within existing budgets" which is code for cuts. He is just too chicken to say what's on the chopping block.

- The Yukon Party says it will have a childcare plan (even though that's a very socialist thing to do) after the Liberals announced they are rolling one out in April.

- The Liberals put a 5 year capital plan in place, now the Yukon Party says they will put a 10 year one in place.

Will they have ANY original ideas this election? Or will it continue to be the Liberal platform on steroids and no commitment on how to pay for any of it?

I want change but can’t trust the Conservative party, they GAVE a private golf course $750,000.00 of tax payer money to keep it from closing, rather than change the business model they just bailed out a golf course. That’s an example of their priority. I can’t support that!

The problem with using the word 'Change' is it does nothing to indicate an improvement from the Status Quo, only that it will be different in some ways. Used as a noun it becomes a destination for actions as in "We are working to accomplish change"
What is being implied in these political buzz words is that things will improve or get better, but space, time and promotional budgets do not allow for these improvements to be identified on a project basis. So instead the party ideology becomes the product that will indicate what flavour that change may be. Perhaps these party hopefuls could step back and explain their visions for our future and how they hope to achieve these objectives. Spoken in plain language without all the buzz-words and feel-good statements.
Yukoners are in the process of selecting which party will manage the affairs of we citizens and work towards what WE feel is important and how OUR money gets spent and on WHAT. In recenty history I believe too much time and money has been spent on trying to change the world for those with personal issues rather than serving the public at large.
And for those who feel the world does need political crusaders to create some changes how about we focus on the simple goals first? Here like everywhere else, we need to get equality figured out. How can policies provide a future where all people are treated the same? Equal opportunities for all and none get an advantage based on their race or other traits. It begins and ends with all of us, the political pandering just adds gas on the fire.

Finally, a party supporting tourism and offering innovative ideas!! That's the kind of leadership I'm voting for.

All Tourism Yukon and TIA did this pandemic was passively read out Hanley's report every week instead of offering solutions or taking action. And we had a Tourism Minister that was either AWOL or against tourism which wasn't helpful.

I guess that's what happens when you have no skin in the game, but enjoy comfortable government pay cheques.

It is regrettable that the Yukon Party isn't offering anything substantive.
More important than anything else, we need this so-called state of emergency to end. Why is this not a priority? Where is the policy statement?
Currie won't address this because he will lose a large number of voters who have become convinced through unprecedented propaganda and messaging and censorship that COVID is the great killer of our time and that lockdowns and restrictions and "mask mandates" are a necessary evil.

Secondly, we need to re-examine our relationship with FNs. The current trifecta of Liberal governments (Trudeau/Silver/Curtis) is handing immense amounts of cash and power to FNs and this is translating to an increasingly obvious display of condescension, reverse racisim and discrimination by FNs. I can provide a litany of examples of this from news stories since the Liberals have taken office, and I do not believe this bodes well for non-FN persons or non-FN businesses in the Yukon.

Currie won't address this because he will lose the FN vote, if he even had a chance to get it. Do the Liberals have the FN vote locked in the Yukon? Or, must a political party offer even more to buy their vote.
Thirdly, we need to re-examine the massive spending increases and re-assess priorities. We cannot continue to spend like drunken sailors.

Sadly, we instead have 3 main political parties offering more-or-less varying shades of the same colour policies. I am not impressed.

Yukoners do want change because we are sick and tired of false promises from liberals and no sense of direction from NDP. These two have shown they can just waste money . When Yukon Party was in power we had houses for people to live in. Over $60 million a year.

Our education system ran solidly.
We did not go into debt by $100's of millions.
We helped people in need by building Whistlebend place that Yukoners needed. Now it is one step from being full but liberal wanted to kill the project so Yukoners would have to go somewhere else and not see their love ones. Great plan liberals.

Liberals' are showing they do not want to change because they have demonstrated they don't know what they are doing to manage Yukon public business. Putting in a liberal will just compound the mess we are in.

The political pension regime has been the largest factor in changing the spectrum. It gives people the incentive to run for all the wrong reasons. This is when the outlandish promising started and has never quit. All I know is that the Yukon we love is disappearing and if we don't smarten up.... it's gone!! Just keep voting for the idiot that promises the most and see where we're at in 10 years. Paradise lost.

Ok, a bit of a rant but here we go. Lawn signs.

We are only 3 bloody days or so into the election and already our roads and highways are covered with little garbage lawn signs. I get that parties have to put out big signs to get their name and face out there. Fine. But why do you have to litter the roads with so many little signs that end up as garbage in our ditches, wooded areas etc?
The parties should all agree to keep their bloody lawn signs on ACTUAL LAWNS (or snowbanks in this case I guess). And if the parties refuse to agree on something then how about the city pass a bylaw restricting them in these places? I'm far from a big environmental guy, but there is no need for all the political plastic crap which just clogs up our culverts and ditches. Rant Over.

I like the slogan "Action for a change" it speaks to what they will do while also taking a shot at the government. This is a clear sense of direction that Yukoners can understand that this party wants to take, not backwards and all over the map like the liberals are doing!

Ranj uses a health briefing on CV19 to put out liberal campaign promises. He stated that all Yukon liquor outlets would get 25% which was just a lie! Why lie Ranj?

Do you think Yukoners are stupid and can't see through the crap your are trying to sell?

Here's what Yukon liberal party has done to outlets that sells liquor.
86 got 12 and 13% discount which equals 25%.
60 outlets got 12% discount and did not get the other 13% on top.
But worse - they used a health briefing on CV19 to talk about the liberals platform instead of giving Yukoners re-assurance on how our health care is moving forward.

@W.b.o. Welcome to the low class Licensee discount club. The Liberal Gov. Discount policy created 2 pricing levels for licensees.

Low class: Approx 60 Licensees do not qualify for BRP get 12% discount.
High clas: Approx 85 licensees qualify for BRP get 25% discount.

Do you know if your competition is getting double the discount then you are? I don't.

Our businesses need help that the liberal government was only sort of providing. They seemed more interested in press conferences than actually helping business. I hope Currie and his team will live up to these promises, because I am hurting along with others. And currently, I don't fall into the group that received the discount on liquor. I am hopeful that this benefit is applied equally to all license holders in the future. It is not like we are trying to pass on savings to customers even, like that Hutton keeps saying. The Liberal programmes against deliberate, and responsible, intellectual-thought can be defeated forever! Humanity can rise again!
