Welcome to the new Whitehorsestar.com

January 24, 2008 at 1:32 pm

We are thrilled to have you see and experience the website re-design we’ve spent more than six months working on. Here is a quick guide to what’s new and changed with our site.

Homepage
The most dramatic change to the website is the homepage. We researched and analyzed how people use our homepage and the result is a completely new layout that adheres to these patterns. Our aim is to showcase all of the latest stories and information in an easy to read and visually pleasing design, with a clear separation of free vs. paid, subscribers-only content.

News, Sports, Letters, Opinions and Classifieds
Near the top of your screen is a navigation bar that gives quick access to our main sections.

Story comments
A brand new feature is comments: any story in our archive is available to be publicly commented on. We look forward to the lively discussions that will ensue from our readers having a distinct voice of their own. Please read our policy for more information on comments.

Archive calendar
It is now extremely easy to browse through our archives; a collection of stories and media that currently date back to 2006. We’ll be adding earlier years as the weeks go by. Head to News, Sports, Letters or Opinions and an archive calendar will allow you to flip through stories by day, month and year.

Improved search
We know that a fast, accurate search engine is very important to our website visitors. To meet this demand, we have have located a search box at the top of your screen with results distinctly labeled with a free or paid, subscribers-only content icon. News, Sports, Letters and Opinions are fully searchable.

Subscriber-only content
As before, our website includes archival content that requires a paid subscription to access. Other benefits to a subscription include classified section downloads and a plethora of special new features we’ll be rolling out over the next few months. Stay tuned to our blog for these announcements.

Email story or blog post
Think a particular story or blog post will be interesting to a friend or colleague? You can now easily send them an email message with direct link intact.

Weather report
For those of you who like to keep an eye on Whitehorse weather, we’ve included a real-time report that automatically updates every 10 minutes.

RSS feed
If you like to use RSS the feeds for our website are available at http://whitehorsestar.com/rss. A headline, brief summary and link back to our website for the full article are included in each feed.

Mobile edition
More people than ever are accessing the web via their mobile phones. We’ve made it easy for these visitors to stay current with the Whitehorse Star. Simply point your mobile web browser at http://whitehorsestar.com/mobile and we’ll take care of the rest.

Now it’s your turn…
Our staff is proud of our new website and we trust that you will be happy with it as well. If you’d like to send us feedback on the site, please visit our blog to post a comment or contact us with a private email message.

Kudos on the clean new look

This is much, much better than the old site. For one thing, it’s possible to tell when paragraphs begin and end because of the clean and airy layout. Congratulations to all involved.

Just one question. Why does an email address already appear before you enter a comment? I’ve seen “staff19@whitehorsestar.com” here and also “stephanie@...” on one of the article pages.

Thanks for your feedback. We’re glad you like the new design.

Good catch on the email address being pre-filled. This issue has now been solved throughout the website.

Small item: looks like the time zone setting for the comments is slightly off. The last one was posted in the future.

This new site has a great look and I love the larger photo!

As an old Yukoner living Outside, checking in with this site is my quick way of keeping in touch with what’s up with the north.

Kudos on the new look, very usable.

The RSS feed is nice but doesn’t indicate (or omit) non-subscriber content. I’m not going to put it in my reader if I’ll be getting articles I can’t access.

Any chance of a free preview period for the subscriber side?

I’ve been looking forward to an upgraded Star for a long time but was hoping that it would have been full page pdfs of the paper version, like this:

http://www.auroranewspaper.com/pdf/2903news.pdf

That way subscribers could browse all the little side articles and ads we see in the paper version.

I like the idea of commenting on stories also, as you know Yukoners are notoriously opinionated.

Dave - Good eye. We’ll take of the comment issue.

Anthony - We’ll adjust the RSS feeds accordingly.

That guy - Please send a message to Subscriptions (via the Contact page) about a possible account trial.

Time on comments has now been adjusted and the RSS feed has been updated to only include free stories. Please note that it may take up to 24 hours for the new feed to resolve.

I love the new look, it is really crisp and clean. I too am a former Yukoner and check in now and then to catch up on news.

One thing I do miss is the Link to Humane Society Web site. Will it be put back on?

Enjoy your new “look” - very fresh and informative.  Keep up the great work.  I am able to keep up on what’s happening in the Yukon via sites like yours.

Doug - Yes, we’ll be bringing back the Pet of the Week feature in February.

I really enjoy your new layout.  Great work people!

I have friends in Whitehorse and in 2006 I visited your beautiful city.  Reviewing your news on this site is a great way for me to remain in contact with the city from the comfort of my home in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

I hope to visit Whitehorse again in the future.

Much improved format but would like to see a segment for obituaries and formal announcements (wedding, anniversaries etc).

Just curious as to why the front page photo is always updated hours before the new articles appear…would be nice if they were all updated at once!

Otherwise, great new look!

Jenny - The new website celebrates its one week anniversary today, so we’re still trying to sort out the publishing process and timing. We appreciate the feedback and will take your concern into consideration.

I think the new site looks awesome: clean,  nice to navigate, and easy to read. A big improvement over the old site, and money well spent.

I enjoyed your new format. I visited the Little Salmon area a long time ago(1969-70) and helped a fellow Anton Fritz construct a gas station(Gulf) just down(west) from where Dury Creek enters Little Salmon Lake, I believe they call this road Cambell(?). I wonder if anyone remembers him ??? I could tell you many stories about this fellow and the opening of the mine up the road.

I rather like it although I would have hoped to see the animals from the shelter on your web sight still.  You’re office is not wheelchair accessible so that the for those who do not carry a credit card or have people to do their chores including dropping off cash or cheques to your office it makes it quite difficult.  Oh well at least the Yukon News is free.

I like it…you’ve kept it simple, providing the most important up front, whitespace is good.  Great to provide this forum for honest public discussion.

Am I missing something?? Wouldn’t it be nice to have the date on the front page as opposed to the date articles are written, which may or may not be the paper’s date!

Whitehorse Star

Feb 5, 2008 at 5:05 pm

Peter, articles on the homepage represent the latest news we have to offer, print or web.

Congratulations on your new layout & improved accessibility !! I may even chance becoming a subscriber again. I bailed out of my subscription with you shortly after moving to BC in 2003 because I had access to only a few more articles than were on your public site. It was so discouraging. The Star is now a warm and welcoming website, and an enjoyable way to stay informed, since I still have family & friends in the Yukon. Love the comments page, and the additional photos with certain news items. Bravo Whitehorse…and your illuminating Star of the North!!

Well done on the update. I agree with Peter, you should have the (publication) date on the homepage like on the old website. Also why are there no authors listed of the articles (both on the web and via rss)?

Great new look. Could there be an archive of peoples comments, so people can view them all instead of the most commented?  Thks
