Yukon biathletes finish strong at Games
An incredible four medals were won by Yukon Biathletes on Monday, during the sports first day of competition at the Arctic Winter Games in Yellowknife.
An incredible four medals were won by Yukon Biathletes on Monday, during the sports first day of competition at the Arctic Winter Games in Yellowknife.
Erin Oliver-Beebe posted a great time of 24:14:40 in the 5.0-km Individual - Junior Female Biathlon event.
The time earned Oliver-Beebe the gold medal and was more than one minute ahead of the next best time.
Yukoner Evelynn Kitchen also raced very well in the 5.0-km Individual - Junior Female event, finishing in sixth place with a time of 25:50.90.
In the 7.5-km Individual - Senior Male event, Ryan Burlingame won the gold medal for the Yukon with a time of 29:51.20. Burlingame’s time was nearly five minutes ahead of the second place time.
Yukoner Nathaniel Rodden just missed out of third place by less than one minute to finish fourth in the 7.5-km Individual - Senior Male race.
Aliye Nevzat Tuzlak won the bronze medal in the 7.5-km Individual - Senior Female with a time of 38:20.00, while teammate Aryn Lee Clarke placed fourth at 40:16.20.
In the 5.0-km Individual - Senior Male (Biathlon: snowshoe) Jeremy Johnson finished in third with a time of 40:13.90. Fellow Yukoner Erik Jacobsen also had a great race in the 5.0-km race, placing fifth with a total time of 42:31.40.
The Yukon’s total medal count by the end of Monday’s competition was 10, with five gold medals, two silver medals and three bronze medals.
This total put the Yukon in third place in the Arctic Winter Games standings, just six
behind Alaska and eight behind the Northwest Territories.
