Women’s basketball league great place to get exercise

The Whitehorse Women’s Basketball league started off their latest season last week.

The Whitehorse Women’s Basketball league started off their latest season last week.

Four teams are signed up this year, made up of basketball players of different skill levels. Making the teams this way ensures that all teams are competitive.

Members of the league vary from college players to women who haven’t played before, to those who played in high school.

“It’s a rec league so it’s really fun,” said Diedre Davidson, who plays for the league and is an executive member.

Davidson says this year the league has seen new players. “(There’s) a lot of new fresh faces, so it’s kind of exciting,” she said.

The new members allowed them to have a full four teams.“Every year we hope to get four teams out,” said Davidson.

The league has been in Whitehorse for many years. Davidson says it goes back to the 80s, and possibly further.

“The league has been around a long time,” she said. Davidson says the league is a good place for women to get out and meet new people, or re-connect with old friends, while staying fit.

“(It’s an) opportunity to get some exercise,” she said. The league has games every Thursday at Vanier Catholic Secondary School at 8 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. and Sundays at F.H. Collins Secondary School at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.

The league is mostly full, but Davidson says there are a few more places available for anyone wishing to participate.
