Team Yukon finishes with 81 medal total

Team Yukon finished the 2008 Arctic Winter Games (AWG) with an incredible 81 medals.

The total placed the Yukon in sole possession of fifth place in the AWG standings, just nine medals behind Northern Alberta.

Yukon athletes won 26 gold medals all together, while the territory also finished with 25 silver medals and 30 bronze medals by the conclusion of the Games.

Alaska finished in first place with 202 medals in total, while the Northwest Territories came in second with 111 medals.

Yukon medal winners included Jason Carlson, who finished in second place in the badminton single juvenile male. Carlson lost to Sequssuna Schmidt of Greenland in two sets (11-21) and (12-21) in the final.

In the juvenile female category for badminton, Vanessa Carlson won the gold medal, defeating Tanja Pedersen of Greenland in two sets (21-11) and (21-5) In the juvenile female doubles, Carlson won a second gold medal with teammate Abbie Frances Rotondi. In the doubles juvenile mixed event, Carlson and Rotondi placed second.

In dog mushing for the five dog 10-km juvenile coed race, Rachel Kinvig finished first with a time of 19:22.05, while her older brother Benjamin Luvi Kinvig was right behind her to take second with a time of 19:29.65.

In soccer, the juvenile female team placed second after losing to Alaska in the final by a score of 2-1. The Yukon’s high scorer was Mary Catherine Bennett, who finished with six goals and one assist for the week. She was second only to a player from the Northwest Territories, who finished with one more assist.

In volleyball, the Yukon’s junior female team won the bronze after beating Greenland in a close three set thriller (16-25), (23-25), (25-8), (25-23) and (15-12). The boys’ team placed fifth overall.

Logan Frederick Roots finished first with a time of 24:44.79 in the 5-km juvenile male snowshoeing event, while Mikeala Shaw finished with a time of 32:21.50 in the juvenile female event, which won her the bronze medal. 

William Kennedy finished with a time of 53:02.37 in the 10-km junior male event, which earned him the bronze medal.

Note AWGs Cross Country
Dahria Anne Beatty Team Yukon won 4 gold Ulus in 4 races. She was dominant in the midget girls category, anchoring the Yukon relay team and posting a lap time of over 40 sec faster than her nearest competitor.
