Midget Mustangs fail to qualify for semi-finals; finish with 2-2 record

A hard fought 5-2 loss to Kerry Park in the Midget Mustang's third game of the 2008 provincials on Tuesday eliminated the team from semi final qualification.

A hard fought 5-2 loss to Kerry Park in the Midget Mustang’s third game of the 2008 provincials on Tuesday eliminated the team from semi final qualification.

The Mustangs entered the contest against Kerry Park with a record of 1-1 and because of the short round robin needed to win the game in order to finish in the top two of their pool standings.

The team concluded the provincials on a winning note today against Port Moody today in their final round robin contest.

The team’s first game at the provincials was against Kitimat on Sunday.

Kitimat had a strong second period, scoring four goals in total, which resulted in them taking control of the game.  The final score of the contest was 7-4 in favour of Kitimat.

The Mustang’s next contest was against Nelson on Monday and the team was able to rebound from its previous defeat.

Heading into the third period with the score 2-2, the Mustangs broke the game open, scoring five unanswered goals to get the 7-2 victory.

On Wednesday, the Mustangs played a very strong team from Kerry Park.

On two separate occasions, the Mustangs battled back from a one-goal deficit and managed to draw even heading into the third period.

A couple of defensive breakdowns in the final frame resulted in Kerry Park scoring two quick goals, which took the Mustangs out of the contest.

The Mustangs won their final game against Port Moody by a score of 6-3 to close out the tournament. The team was ahead by a score of 1-0 at the end of the first.

A high scoring second period resulted in three Mustang’s goals to give them the 4-3 advantage.

In the third the team scored two more goals to finish the game.

Mustangs coach Dale Kulych said he was really proud of the way his team played at the tournament.

“It was a good way to end the tournament,“ he said.

“I am quite happy with the boys, they played relaxed and well. It was just an all around good performance by everybody.“
