After finishing the round robin with a record of 3-1, the Yukon’s junior male curling team was in the perfect position to qualify for today’s gold medal final.
All the team needed to advance was a win over Northern Alberta, but an open end draw to the house resulted in a 6-5 loss and has forced the Yukon squad into making a detour with their hopes of playing in the final.
With the loss to Northern Alberta, Team Yukon must now play the N.W.T. in a game today that will determine who qualifies for the gold medal game and who ends up being awarded the bronze.
“The boys have been playing well,“ said team coach Ron Koltun. “I am proud of our team no matter how well they do, but we are hoping for the gold.“
In their final game of the round robin, the Yukon male curling team beat the N.W.T. by a score of 9-4.
So far at the tournament, Northern Alberta is the only team who has beaten the Yukon curling squad. The two teams met up in the second game of the round robin, where Northern Alberta won by a 8-3 final.
Koltun said the team has gotten better as the tournament has gone on and he thinks if the Yukon boys qualify for the gold medal game that they are capable of beating Northern Alberta.
