Former Mustang greats to participate in first-ever alumni hockey game

Hockey fans are in for a treat tonight, as the first-ever Whitehorse Mustangs Alumni Hockey Game will be played at the Canada Games Centre.

Hockey fans are in for a treat tonight, as the first-ever Whitehorse Mustangs Alumni Hockey Game will be played at the Canada Games Centre.
The game will feature current university, college and junior hockey players as well as players playing “AAA” midget Outside the territory.

All of the players involved in tonight’s game have at one point or another donned the Mustang jersey.
Some of the players will also include third year graduating midgets as well Mustangs who are just finished their third year in the program.

Players will range from those just turning 17 years old to guys that are turning 22.
All proceeds generated at the event will go towards the Whitehorse Mustangs Hockey Club.
“The players who have made it to the next level and are playing Outside have really worked hard to get to that level,“ said Gerry Perrier, Whitehorse Minor Hockey Association development co-ordinator.

“They rarely ever get to play in a real game in front of the home crowd, so part of it is for them to be able to show their skills in front of a home crowd and also for the fans at home to actually see what kind of hockey players we’ve produced.“
The game is set to begin at 6:45 p.m. and will include three 20-minute periods. Rec hockey league rules will apply, which eliminates open ice hitting.

Under the rec rules, contact is allowed, but there is no body checking. The game will also be officiated.
Each team will have up to 15 players, plus a goalie.

One squad will wear the home Mustangs uniform, while the other will feature the visiting jersey.
Jay Glass and Kerry Pettitt, who were coaches for the PeeWee Mustangs this season have volunteered their time to coach at the alumni game.

The price of admission is $5 per person.
Perrier said he hopes the alumni games becomes an annual tradition in the community.
“Judging from the player interest and the people who have asked about it, they seem pretty excited about it,“ he said.

“So we will gauge the interest and regardless of whether or not we pack the house, it would be a nice thing to do each year; to celebrate the high level of skill that comes out of Whitehorse and showcase it.“
He said he is looking forward to watching a great game of hockey.
“These guys have a lot to show,“ Perrier said.

“Some of them have played at a really high level. They have a ton of skill and they are all pretty good friends, so even though the game is really for nothing, there is enough pride on the line I think that they will work hard.“
