Child had contracted pneumonia, H1N1

A young Yukoner who contracted the H1N1 virus has died, the territory’s chief medical officer said today.

A young Yukoner who contracted the H1N1 virus has died, the territory’s chief medical officer said today.

The elementary school-aged girl, whose name and exact age are not being released, already had pneumonia when she caught the H1N1 virus, Dr. Brendan Hanley said.

She was medevaced to Vancouver last Monday after it was confirmed she had the influenza virus. The young girl died Sunday night.

This is the first H1N1-linked fatality in the Yukon, although Hanley noted pneumonia was likely the primary cause of the child’s death.

People with underlying chronic conditions are most at risk, Hanley said, and should take extra care to stay healthy during the flu season.

Of the 95 H1N1-related deaths reported on the Health Canada website, 80 per cent had underlying conditions.

People with lung, heart and liver diseases are most at risk, Hanley said, as well as people with compromised immune systems.

“This is a strong reminder that influenza is not something to be taken lightly,” he said.

“Every year in Canada, there are between 3,000 and 5,000 (flu-related) deaths. As a whole, we are seeing smaller numbers of deaths with this virus than from regular influenza; however, we are seeing younger people affected.

“It is more important than ever for Yukoners to take proper precautions to protect themselves and others, including getting vaccinated,” Hanley said.

As of Sunday evening, 8,342 Yukoners had been given the H1N1 vaccine, while 5,952 have received the seasonal flu vaccine. Hanley noted the seasonal flu vaccine is just as important as the H1N1 vaccine.

He said parents of children with underlying conditions should ensure the whole family is vaccinated and speak to their family doctor or local nurse about a health plan should their children come down with flu symptoms.

Vaccination clinics continue to be held around the territory this week.

In Whitehorse, the Canada Games Centre remains the main centre for vaccinations, with satellite clinics being held at various public buildings throughout the week.

Today, vaccinations are available at the Yukon government administration building.

Tomorrow, they will be available at the CAIRS office, located at the former Wharf on Fourth building; Wednesday, the clinic will go to Yukon College.

Shots will be given out at the Elijah Smith Building on Thursday and Friday. Today and Friday, the vaccine will be available at the Kwanlin Dun health centre.

The Department of Health and Social Services decided today to extend the clinic at the Canada Games Centre until next week, every day but Wednesday.

Of the five Yukoners who have been admitted to hospital with H1N1, one has died, one was treated and released and the other three remain in hospital.

Yea stubbornness, in the fact that people are concerned about a rushed to market vaccine that has no proof of working. Hey aubin, go take my shot for me seeing you are so eager. You people are infringing on peoples rights by using fear and junk science to force people to do something they don’t want to do. If you can prove without question that these vaccines work, show me the documents, but you can’t.So stop trying to change peoples minds. And the fact that the PROOF of these garbage potions doing more harm than good is well documented, do you care about FACTS or just about the profits of these faceless corporations that do not care about your health but actively try to destroy it. Let the attacks begin, because I know the only response from people on this site is “did you eat paint chips”? If I’m so wrong prove it, skip the childish name calling because the ones who can’t back up something they disagree with are the real children here.

Enough of the misery

Francias:

You may like to wallow in your negativity, but the rest of us don’t.

You are entitled to an opinion, but your opinions are mostly just ranting bs.

Stop. Please. You are miserable.

Francais how you can you use this article to spew your opinions? Do you have no empathy for anyone? I know the family and they haven’t even been able to say goodbye to their daughter before you start your ranting. Could you please have some respect for the individuals involved and stay out of this story, instead of turning it into your own personal agenda. It’s not always about you or your opinions it can be about real people who are just trying to do their best in a situation that nobody would ever want to experience. Get off the soapbox for a moment and think of something other than your facts or fictions whatever they maybe, and show some compassion.

I think its about time the Star refuse to show any of Francias’s idiotic comments.
She doesn’t know anything about what she comments on and makes no sense at all

Seriously Pillman either shut up or get off the comment writing.  I know this family personally and for you to turn a story that is just letting people know what happened is insensitive of you. I can tell, you have no one in your life that you care about or have any empathy for others or else you wouldn’t be speaking out of your butt.

If you continue to be negative you don’t deserve one ounce of respect.

My heart goes out to the family and the loss of such a wonderful child.

Pillman, must be terrible and lonely to be so bitter all the time, i feel sad for you.

My sympathies to the family, i could never imagine going through that, and as a single father myself, i rushed to get everyone swine flu vaccinated.

Aubin, i totally agree with your statement, i was in the lineup at a store the other day, and was sneezed and coughed on. Stay the hell home if your sick

My heart goes out to the family of this young beautiful girl!!!!

If people don’t have something nice or respectful to post on this story then they shouldn’t say anything at all.

Hey - Francias: I have been reading your idiotic, shallow comments for a few months.  Without a doubt, you are ignorant and insensitive as well as uninformed and seemingly illiterate.  Does us all a favour and disconnect your internet and keep your comments to yourself.  P.S. - I hope that you don’t get the swine flu and pass it on to others.

Is this all for real? People are more concerned with a person’s comments? Wake up people, if you dont like a persons opinion and wish to see it restricted MOVE TO CUBA or any other dictatorship nation and have fun because they enjoy and accept people like you. Sorry this is Canada and any attack on any free speech is basically a ATTACK on the VETERANS whom served fighting for this right(remembrance day is coming up so REMEMBER HARDER), no matter if its right or wrong, logical or not logical in your mind. Thats what makes our nation great.
