Aikido Yukon is hosting an open house this evening for other martial arts groups in town that may be interested in using their permanent dojo.
The dojo, located at 415 Baxter street is one of the only permanent spaces for martial arts in town (Judo Yukon has one permanent set up above the gym at Vanier Catholic Secondary School, but many clubs are without a permanent space).
The remaining martial arts groups in town have to set up and tear down their practice space before and after every lesson.
Therefore, Aikido Yukon would like to offer their space to other martial arts groups free of charge because it is not in use at all times, said Mary Gamberg, president of Aikido Yukon.
Gamberg says they would not be against other non-martial arts groups using the space either, but a cost may apply.
“Primarily it’s for martial arts groups, but we are inviting other groups that may want to use the dojo as well,” said Gamberg.
In the past the space has been used for prison guard training, belly dancing and more, Gamberg says.
The evening will be for coaches to get together to view the space, and meet with other clubs in Whitehorse. Gamberg said it’s a night to mix and mingle, and could be a good place for those interested in martial arts to get in contact with a coach.
The event is being held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Aikido Yukon building on 415 Baxter St. There will be snacks provided for attendees.
“It’s a (time) for people to come in and see the dojo,” said Gamberg.
