A season of Athletics Yukon Fun Runs began Tuesday night with more than 30 people taking part.
The course, which covers five kilometres from F.H. Collins Secondary School, along the paved Millennium Trail and back along residential roads, has remained largely unchanged since the runs began three decades ago, said organizer Don White.
The races are different things to different people. Some are using the 5K to track their improvements over the season, others use them as an excuse to get out.
“It allows people to come out to run with other people on the pavement,” said White.
For the youth group he coaches, the runs will also serve as a timetrial about every month to gauge how their training is going.
The Tuesday night Fun Runs occur alongside a trail option for those that crave dirt instead of pavement under their feet.
That series kicked off last Thursday. The location changes every week, with the most current information being shared on the Athletics Yukon Facebook page.
Tonight’s run is scheduled for Chadburn Lake Blue Trail and starts at 6:30 p.m.
This series also runs for the summer and into the fall and will preview Yukon River Trail Marathon legs leading up to the end-of-July race.
