It was a day of revenge at the Yukon School Volleyball Championships Saturday in senior action with both teams who lost in five-set heartbreakers in the Super Volley finals taking the crown in the rematch.

In senior girl’s action, it was a rubber match between the F.H. Collins Secondary School Warriors and the Porter Creek Secondary School Rams.

The Warriors won the Dawson Invitational tournament with the Rams fighting back to take the Super Volley title after trailing two sets, ending the Warriors’ chance at a second-straight triple crown of victories.

But the defending Yukon champs were eager for a rematch and got their wish in the final after finishing the five-team round robin in top spot, with the Rams finishing in second.

The Warriors beat the Robert Service School team from Dawson in the semifinal with the Rams beating the Vanier Secondary School Crusaders. The Crusaders went on to win the bronze medal.

This time around, it was the Warriors who fought back with the Rams taking the first set 25-21. But F.H. Collins would strike back in the second set winning 25-14 and taking the third and deciding set 15-7 to win the title for the second year in a row.

On the boy’s side, six teams participated with Robert Service sending two teams and Vanier also having two teams compete.

Crusaders head coach Caroline Holway said the second team, Vanier White for the tournament, was made up of players who didn’t make the main 12-person roster but still wanted to play.

The team finished in fifth spot and played in the quarter-finals losing to Robert Service. The top two teams got a bye right into the semifinals.

Porter Creek, who finished undefeated, and F.H. Collins, who beat the Crusaders Blue team, got the byes. So the Super Volley champion Crusaders had to take the long road to the finals beating Robert Service School before beating the Warriors in the semifinals to set up a rematch with the Rams.

The Warriors, the champions from last year, went on to win the bronze.

In the final game of the season Saturday afternoon in front of a packed crowd at F.H. Collins, the Rams took an early 6-3 lead in the first set before the Crusaders stormed back. Led by power hitting up front, the Crusaders took the first set 25-19.

The Rams fought back in the second set with epic rallies that had the crowd gasping and applauding at the end of each point.

In the third and deciding set to 15 points, the Crusaders marched out to an early lead 6-1 and were up as many as seven points before the Rams started fighting back.

Down 13-7, the Rams were able to serve out the game with eight straight points.

The team jubilantly ran onto the court to celebrate what seemed like the impossible, but turns out they already came from behind the same way earlier in the tournament.

“In the round robin we were in the exact same position against Vainer,” Rams head coach Derrick Bilodeau said. “I just told them they had to play our side of the court and just make our serves, make our passes one point at a time and just keep clawing back and believe in yourselves. They did it then and they did it again here in the final.”

This was the first Yukon championships for all of the players on the team, Bilodeau said. The Rams senior team finished second in last year’s final.

In Grade 7 action, the Tantalus Community School girl’s team from Carmacks won the gold medal over Holy Family Elementary School.

Yukon School Sports Association president Jeff Cressman said this is the first time a community school has won a championship in his memory over a Whitehorse team. Tantalus was fourth-ranked heading into the playoffs and had upset wins in both games to take the title home.

On the Grade 7 boy’s side, Christ the King Elementary School took the title in two straight sets over Selkirk Elementary School.

Whitehorse Elementary School won the bronze in both divisions.
