Once again, Whitehorse’s two-time defending A Division hockey champs have started their season where they left off.

But they’re not the only ones.

The newly-named Air North-KK Truck Rentals squad is 4-0-0 to start the new recreational hockey season, tying them with a revamped Firth Rangers squad, also 4-0-0, for first place.

The Air North team has won the last two league titles while the Firth squad replaces Roadhouse in the 10-team division.

Air North-KK Truck forward Evan Campbell has piled up eight goals and seven assists in three games, and leads the league with 15 points.

Gold Pan Avalanche’s Mike Arnold and Chris Vance of the KDFN-New Age Warriors both have 14 points to start the year.

Firth Rangers goalie Brian Power leads netminders with a 1.33 GAA alongside his 3-0 record.

SLFS-Murphy Built, ORC Tree Services, NGC Builders, Whitehorse Bobcat, Yukon Brewing and the Canada Winter Games Minor Midget team are also competing in the A Division this season.

League president Kinden Kosick said some teams have dropped out while others have new sponsors.

Another change will see teams play at Takhini Arena slightly more often.

“We like that, because we’re all old and don’t like playing on the big ice at the Games Centre,” he chuckled.

“Things are going well. We managed to get enough teams to make our league work for everybody,” Kosick added.

In B Division action meanwhile, the brand-new Goody’s Gas team has also started off the season unbeaten at 3-0-0, and is currently tied for first with KDFN’s B Team atop the seven-team division.

Boston Pizza-Polarcom star Tyler Murray already has 12 goals and seven assists after just three games – good for a league-leading 19 points.

His brother, Stuart Murray, is second with 12 points in three games.

Defensively, Yukon Inn Boiler Room goalie Daryl Froese is 2-0 to start the year with a 1.50 GAA.

The CRB Nighthawks – last year’s division champs – will be looking to repeat this season, while the Trans North Helicopters and Envirolube Oilers are also competing.
