The Elderactive Recreation Association of the Yukon has finalized the roster for next month’s Canada 55+ Games in Saint John, N.B.
With 143 participants, 23 supporters, two co-chefs and one Yukon director, the contingent of 169 is the largest the territory has sent to the 55+ Games.
It’s also the youngest with an average age of 68, though there are 11 participants over the age of 80, and the oldest Yukon’s representative is 93.
Participants on Team Yukon are coming from five communities: Whitehorse, Dawson, Watson Lake, Tagish and Marsh Lake.
There are 85 women competing and 58 men in 16 different sports ranging from track and field to swimming, cribbage to darts and badminton to 8-ball pool.
“These Games promise to be exciting, fun and fast-paced,” says the press release issued Wednesday by the Elderactive association. “Team Yukon will make its presence known through its accomplishments and spirit on and off the field.”
The Yukon has also submitted a bid to host the August 2020 Games. Also bidding is Fort McMurray, Alta., Kamloops, B.C., and Calgary.
Representatives of the Yukon will be making a presentation in Saint John to the bid committee.
Whitehorse hosted the Games in 2004. It’s expected there’ll be 2,000 participants in Saint John.
Having to have a proper track and field facility to host the Games was among the reasons why the Yukon government went forward this summer with the multi-million dollar reconstruction of the F.H. Collins track and field.
Completion of the facility, including an eight-lane rubberized track, is scheduled for next summer.
