A total of 19 swimmers from the Northern Novas participated Sunday in the Synchro Yukon territorial championships at the Canada Games Centre.
Synchro president Keith Maguire said today swimmers were scored and ranked on individual performances but they also performed duet swims and larger team events.
“I was really impressed with the routines and how far they have come,” he said. “It was the synchronicity and the flexibility of their presentations.”
Maguire said the swimmers were scored and ranked in the individual performances.
“They have to do four figures,” he explained. “As part of the competition they did individual figures where they were required to conduct a certain pose that was judged.”
He said while their were no ribbons for the duet and team performances, the routines were judged.
“They all got first.”
Maguire credits the work of coaches Aura-lea Harper, Heather O’Carroll and Teera Walsh for advancing the skills of the Northern Novas who range in age from six to 16.
In the Little Dippers recreational group, Layla Hombert placed first, followed in second by Chelsea Harder and Kayla Strand in third.
In the competitive category for the nine- and 10-year-old swimmers, Mia Maguire was the lone swimmer.
In the 11-12 competitive category, Kate Josie placed first, followed by Kinley Battersby in second and Mia Houde in third.
In the 13-15 category, Helene Maguire placed first, followed by Taylor John in second and Ella Laliberty in third.
Camron Maguire, the club’s only male swimmer who has been synchronized swimming for three years, was the only competitor in the competitive 16-18 category.
Keith Maguire said 15 of the swimmers will be travelling to Surrey, B.C., in April to compete in a provincial competition.
