Lee Hawkins set the pace in this year’s Long Lake Triathlon on Saturday.

Competing in the open men’s category, Hawkins completed the race in one hour, 45 minutes and 44 seconds, or five minutes and 20 seconds ahead of second-place Stephen Waterreus running in the masters men category.

Erica VanVlack, running in the open women’s category, posted the fastest time for women, completing the course in 2:00:11, 31 minutes and 26 seconds ahead of Kylie Bird, the only other woman to enter.

The course involved a one-kilometre swim in Long Lake, a 15.5-kilometre mountain bike ride and a six-kilometre run to the finish line.

Tim Sellars finished third among the men in a time of 1:55:49, followed by Patrice Brunet with a time of 2:07:12 and Chris Potvin in a time of 2:15:10.

Hawkins’ winning time was 14 minutes faster than the last year’s time of 1:58:38 posted by Marc Pronovost.

Charlie’s Angels dominated the mixed category with a time of 1:33:49, based in part on a strong swim by Victoria Ryan, who left all the others in her wake.

Megan Wilson completed the mountain bike leg for the Angels and Dave Eikelboom did the run.

The Angels’ time was 18 minutes and 11 seconds faster than the second-place time of 1:59:00 by the Slowpokes made up of Christine Hakim, Lauren Whyte and Chris Rider.

Jenny Trapnell, Frederic Robert and Steve Roddick of Earth, Wind and Fire finished third in the mixed category with a time of 2:20:10. Lee Malenchuk, Ric Janowicz and Stephanie Schorr, Flies Don’t Have Lungs, finished fourth in 2:27:08.

This year’s winning time for the mixed was 12 minutes and 24 seconds ahead of last year’s.

The Angie Bennett team of Jody Eikelboom, Sam Slater and Kayleen Wilms finished first in the open women’s event in a time of 1:47:49. The only other women’s team, Team Kranenborg, with Rachelle Kranenborg, Sophie Blackburn and Monica Kurtz, finished in 2:37:12.

It was the third year on this course for the Long Lake Triathlon. There were a total of 25 participants this year.
