A heated game between Mexico and Australia boiled over in extra innings last night.

With Australia leading 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Mexican baserunner Jonathan Cardona and the Aussie second baseman collided heavily along the baseline, with the infielder hanging onto the ball for the final out.

Following the collision, Cardona and Aussie pitcher Callum Beashel approached one another, and Cardona threw a punch, according to multiple eyewitness reports.

The altercation reportedly caused both benches to clear, but no further punches were thrown. Players were calmed and proceeded to shake hands.

A disciplinary decision had not been made as of press time this morning, said Echo Ross, media liaison for the tournament.

The championship tribunal is meeting this morning, however, and will likely make a decision before action begins today.

No immediate word was given on what type of penalty could be handed down.

The game had playoff implications for both teams, who entered the game tied in the standings with 3-3 records.

Mexico was coming off a 5-3 win over host Canada earlier in the day, and was looking for another upset against the Colts.

Starting pitchers Jerremyah Selu and Jaudiel Oliaiz were both in fine form through five – Beashel’s run on a sac fly in the first was the only score.

Mexico couldn’t solve Selu until the sixth, when runs from Jossie Garcia and Cardona gave them a 2-1 lead.

But when Hayden Mathews replied for Australia in the seventh, it spelled extra innings, where Mathews would once again play an important role.

A single by Dylan Rakich brought home David McCaskie, and a two-run double by Mathews proved to be icing on the cake, as the Colts pulled out a 5-3 win.

Australia is now tied with Japan for fourth place at 4-3, while Mexico drops to 3-4.
