NEW LIFE – The track at Watson Lake received a face-lift last week and went from a dirt mess to a smooth surface.

New life for Watson Lake track

It’s not only by taking a look at the before and after photos where one can see the change in Watson Lake. Just ask any of the 67 participants to the first Watson Lake Secondary School Track and Field meet.

On May 16 and 17, a track and field meet was held at the ‘old track’ which had been resuscitated by the hard work of Darrell Bauman, a local landscaper.

Many phone calls and emails were placed to government officials by the track coach, Rollie Comeau in order to get the field ready for the event.

Bauman was finally given the go-ahead late on May 6. In one exhausting week, the overgrown, root-bound, run-at-your-own-risk track was brought back to life by the under-budgeted contract he received from YTG.

A packer was brought in by Randy Carlson, owner of BlueStone Holdings which gave the track its final touch. On Sunday May 15, Herman Knibbecke spent eight hours laying the lines for the track meet that would take place the following morning.

Athletes from Fort Nelson Secondary School and Johnson Elementary School joined those from Watson Lake Secondary School to compete in a variety of track and field events that were held all day Monday and Tuesday morning.

I went to school in Watson Lake for twelve years. One of the big events was the track and field day. I wish we had a track like this one, it looks real good. Participation in sports is so important for our young students and I want to give my praise for all involved, it looks great. Hi Tara

I used to run on the old track ALONG with Randy Carlson back in the 70's. I'm glad they resurrected it. Good work guys!

First off, congratulations to those fine people in Watson Lake who made this happen despite the fact the Yukon Party was less than helpful.
The Pharmacist's actions are all the more galling when you remember he tried to throw $6,000,000 to $8,000,000 to create 2 soccer fields and a running track in Whitehorse.

His message here is that the Communities are not important, especially the children.
