Yukon River Trail Marathon fully subscribed in two weeks; Kluane Chilkat Bike Relay in 36 hours

For the first time in its 25-year history, the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay filled up in 36 hours.

“Last year it filled up in 10 days and that blew us away,” said race coordinator Mike Kramer.

This year, the event hit its 1,200 rider capacity in 36 hours, which was “phenomenally fast,” said Kramer.

There are still some solo spots for cyclists who want to tackle the 238.3 kilometre course between Haines Junction and Haines, Alaska by themselves.

There are a few special qualities to this year’s race, which is scheduled for June 17, though Kramer said it’s “still the same road; still the same checkpoints.”

The start will be punctuated by a cannon blast.

“He’s assured me there’s not going to be any broken windows,” said Kramer of the operator.

There is also a special bike jersey and t-shirt designed by First Nation artist Mark Preston for participants.

The Yukon River Trail Marathon, which had its registration open on April 1, also filled up in record time.

“It’s a well-known and loved race in town,” said race committee president Jody Eikelboom. “People just kind of know that if they want to do the race, they have to sign up early.”

She said the race, which takes place on July 30, was full in two weeks.

The race does allow participants to transfer their registration to another person and the race’s Facebook page is already active with requests.

Eikelboom said they’re not looking to make any major changes to the race and are always on the lookout for volunteers to help make the event possible.

This year, volunteer perks include some swag from one of the sponsors, Winterlong Brewing Co.
