More than $1.4 million in sport and recreation funding announced

The Government of Yukon, in partnership with the Yukon Lottery Commission and Sport Canada, is supporting Yukon’s sport and recreation community with more than $1.4 million in funding.

“Investing in sports makes for healthy Yukoners and vibrant communities, said Minister of Community Services John Streicker. “We are proud to support Yukon’s many athletes, coaches, officials and sport and recreation organizations with this annual funding. It’s important that Yukoners and Yukon communities have opportunities to grow through participation in sport, recreation and active living.”

The Yukon Recreation Advisory Committee program awarded $739,440 to sport programs, while the Yukon Sport 4 Life program gave $455,000.

Five Special Recreation Groups were awarded $164,320 altogether.

Through the High Performance program, 31 athletes and five officials received funding. They include: Natalie Hynes (cross country skiing) $7,000, Nadia Moser (biathlon) $7,000, Marcus Deuling (cross country skiing) $5,000, Etienne Geoffroy-Gagnon (freestyle skiing) $5,000, Dylan Cozens (hockey) $4,000, Hannah Deuling (cross country skiing) $4,000, Mikayla Kramer (figure skating) $3,500, Jack Amos (athletics) $3,000, Derek Deuling (cross country skiing), $3,000, Rennes Lindsay (swimming) $3,000, Cassis Lindsay (swimming) $2,750, Bryce Anderson (hockey) $2,500, Kryon Crosby (hockey) $2,500, Ethan Davy (snowboarding) $2,500, Jake Draper (biathlon) $2,500, Joseph Hanson (soccer) $2,500, Hannah Kingscote (swimming) $2,500, Maddie Nicholson (hockey), $2,500, Miguel Rodden (freestyle skiing) $2,500, Amanda Thomson (cross country skiing) $2,500, Gavin McKenna (hockey) $2,000, Mael Pronovost (canoe/kayak) 2,000, Lily Witten (gymnastics) $2,000, Emily King (gymnastics) $1,750, Caelan McLean (orienteering) $1,500, Brett Walchuk (hockey) $1,500, Bianca Berko-Malvasio (gymnastics) $1,000, Leif Blake (orienteering) $1,000, Micah Taggart-Cox (speed skating) $1,000, Aidan Hupe (biathlon) $750, Veronica Porter (biathlon) $750, money for attending world championships $3,000.

The following officials received $1,000 each through the same program: Claude Chabot (cross country skiing), Tony Gaw (Yukon Soccer), Lynda Harlow (freestyle skiing), Carrie McClelland (figure skating), Cynthia Onions (speed skating).

The following elite athletes each received $11,500: Knute Johnsgaard (cross country skiing), Dahria Beatty (cross country skiing), Emily Nishikawa (cross country skiing), Jessica Frotten (Paralympic athletics).
