Whitehorse Minor Soccer (WMS) teams took over the Canada Games Centre and Yukon College gymnasium to battle for Toonie Tournament titles last weekend.

Teams clashed in three age group divisions, with the finals playing out Saturday afternoon.

While scores from the championship contests were not reported, the big winners were the U11 Haines Junction Eagles, the U9 Subvert.ca Shredders, and U7 Team Dark Blue.

Haines Junction beat out Creative Works Psychological Services for gold in the 10-team U11 division, while It’s Lunch Time! earned a hard-fought bronze over Team Lime Green.

The Subvert.ca Shredders downed the Team Lime Green to win the 13-team U9 division, while Tim Hortons earned bronze over Team White.

In U7 action, Team Dark Blue downed Team Purple for gold in the 10-team category, while Team Light Blue took down the Whitehorse Firefighters in the third-place game.

The annual Toonie Tournament, held Friday night and Saturday, is one of the fun recreational tournaments the organization hosts, said WMS president Grant Zazula.

“Part of the idea is to help raise money and donations for the food bank,” Zazula said.

The amount raised was unavailable as of press time today.
