The last time Max Melvin-McNutt competed in a slopestyle competition, he was in Bulgaria two seasons ago.
Last weekend, the Yukon snowboarder, who announced his retirement from competitive sport last spring, jumped on his board again to put on a show at the 2017 Yukon Slopestyle Championships.
Now a coach involved with the development of Yukon’s next generation of shredders, Melvin-McNutt said the competition at Mt. Sima was a fun thing to do with his athletes.
“It’s more about them,” he said. “It’s really just a fun thing to do.”
While the competition was easy-going for Melvin-McNutt, it had potential to be stressful for young riders.
Melvin-McNutt offered them words of encouragement and a high-five ahead of their three runs.
Using the rail section, a barrel and two jumps, the riders put their best tricks on display in hopes of impressing the judges in the best-of-three-runs competition.
In the smallest margin of victory, Melvin-McNutt beat Tim Schirmer in the open male category by a point and a half to win the championship and post the highest score of the day: 314.50.
The weekend was a wrap-up for the snowboarders’ coached season.
Competition also included the Yukon Jr. Jam Slopestyle Championships earlier Saturday at the park and the Yukon Snowboardcross Championships on Sunday.
