It was a David versus Goliath moment

It was a David versus Goliath moment for the Midnight Sun United boys as they defeated regular season champs Riverdale in the first leg of their semifinal playoffs.

MSU got on the board in the eighth minute and kept putting pressure on home team Riverdale to answer.

The call never came.

Two minutes shy of halftime, MSU scored again, a missile to the bottom left of the net.

With a crowded bench, fresh legs were never in short supply for MSU, while Riverdale managed with three subs.

MSU defended their lead all the way to the final whistle, earning their first semifinal win.

According to away goal rules, Riverdale now has to score at least three goals to beat MSU for the final spot if the young guns don’t score in the second leg.

The Sternwheelers will have to keep MSU to under two goals, or score more than four to keep the home-away goal differential in their favour.

In other first-leg semifinal action, Copper Ridge (home) and Porter Creek (away) tied at 7-7.

Now Copper Ridge just has to score more points than Porter Creek to net their place in the finals.

The second leg of semifinals takes place March 3 at the CGC.

At 7:30 p.m., Riverdale and MSU face off, while Porter Creek and Copper Ridge play in the late game at 8:30 p.m.
