Last week’s Chilli and Bean Race from Rotary Park to the Tahkini River Bridge went down to the wire.

After 18.5 kilometres of paddling, Alex Jessup and Rob Spinks posted a time or one hour and 26 minutes, just one minute ahead of second-place paddlers Karen Mann and Jake Paleczny.

Solo canoeist Tim Hodgson wasn’t far behind, finishing in third overall with a time of 1:28.

The Paddler’s Abreast voyageur team finished fourth in 1:37, two minutes ahead of the Team Mooney voyageur paddlers that included four generations of Mooneys including Stephen Mooney, captain of the boat and a regular top contender in the Yukon River Quest.

But it was patriarch Frank Mooney still calling the shots.

Solo canoeist Alison Schreiber was sixth in 1:41. Emily Hoefs and Bob Yonker landed their canoe in 1:56 and Hanne Hoefs and Manfred Hoefs finished in 2:21.

The entire field of paddlers were treated to, what else, hot chilli and baked beans with all the fixings.
