The Whitehorse Huskies’ senior hockey season is over.

The Yukon team lost both of its playoff games versus the host Fort St. John Flyers this weekend, ending the team’s dream of bringing the Coy Cup to the territory.

The Flyers followed up an 8-2 victory over the Huskies Saturday with a 5-2 win Sunday.

In doing so, the Flyers earned a berth in the Coy Cup tournament March 24 to 28 and will represent the North at British Columbia’s AA hockey championship in Fort Nelson.

The losses were the first of the Huskies season, after the team strung together an 8-0 record over four weekend series.

Forwards Robbie Stuckey and Kane Dawe scored for the Huskies Saturday, and blue-liners Simon Nugent and Jared Tuton had the goals in Sunday’s matinee.

Goalie J.J. Gainsforth started both games for the Huskies.

The Huskies headed to Fort St. John on a team bus Friday – a trek of more than 1,300 kilometres.

“We weren’t necessarily out-matched. We just didn’t have the legs,” Stuckey told the Star today.

“The drive really got to us Saturday. I think we were all pretty tired. We played well, but in the second period we lost it 4-0. Our legs weren’t there.”

Missing some key forwards didn’t help matters any, said Stuckey.

Talented forwards Adam Henderson, Derek Klassen, Drew Pettitt and Rob Warner were all unavailable for the out-of-town series.

“It was definitely different,” Stuckey said. “All those guys are pretty offensive. With them in the lineup, we definitely get a few more goals, but like I said, we weren’t outmatched. We just had a couple of breakdowns that cost us.”

On Saturday, the Huskies trailed 2-1 after the first period, but gave up four unanswered goals in the second. They weren’t able to recover.

Then on Sunday, Whitehorse led 2-0 after the first and 2-1 after two periods, but a two-minute lapse in the third period – where they allowed three goals – effectively cost them the game.

Meanwhile, Sunday’s contest was the Flyers’ third in three days, after they had battled the Spirit River Rangers in a North Peace Hockey League semifinal game Friday at North Peace Arena.

“We kind of took them a little lightly today,” Flyers coach Gerard Dicaire told Fort St. John website energeticcity.ca Sunday.

“We should have known they were going to come out harder with a good night’s rest. The first two periods weren’t great but the boys stuck with the plan and we had a good third.”

If the Huskies had beaten the Flyers Sunday, the two clubs would have played a sudden-death overtime to determine the winner of the series.

Stuckey said while he and his teammates were “pretty disappointed” in the outcome of the series, they hope to be back on the ice next season.

“I think we’ll be back next year and give it a go again,” he said. “We had a lot of fun.”

Yesterday’s trip home saw the team bus stop in Fort Nelson to weather out a snowstorm.
