The Firth Rangers have retained their Oldtimers Hockey League playoff championship, beating Medicine Chest 7-2 at the Canada Games Centre’s NWTel rink last night.

After finishing fourth in the regular season, the Firth Rangers won four playoff games in a row to clinch the championship. It’s the team’s second year in a row winning the title, but only two players returned under the Rangers banner to repeat: Stu Mackay and Bill Bohmer.

The Rangers were buoyed by Wynn Griffith, who scored six goals in the final and had the assist on Kerry Pettit’s goal. Griffiths also scored nine of the Rangers’ last 12 goals in the playoffs.

Medicine Chest was the Oldtimers regular season champion, but struggled in the playoffs, advancing to the finals through the B-side of the bracket with a win over EDI Wednesday night. In the playoffs’ double knockout format.

Medicine Chest needed to win twice against the Rangers to capture the championship.

But the Rangers only needed one night to seal their title.

Griffith opened scoring about four minutes into the game with an assist from Doug Cote.

Kirk Price tied things up almost 10 minutes later, but Kerry Pettitt added another for the Rangers with 6:23 left in the first.

Chris Nash scored Medicine Chest’s last goal with 5:28 remaining in the first. The regular season’s top scorer, Blayne Monahan’s stick stayed silent.

The Firth Rangers would go up 3-2 heading into the second period.

Griffith would add four more goals with various assists from Pettitt, Cote and Gary Seed.

Oldtimers hockey is now wrapped up for the season, but the AGM will take place April 19 at 7 p.m. at the Tetra Tech Office.
