The lead boats pulled into Carmacks checkpoint shortly before 9 a.m.

Tandem canoe team “Cache Flash,” brothers Tim and Pat Turner, stopped the clock at 8:45 a.m., followed shortly by “Perfect Storm”‘s Gaetan Plourde and Jeff Brainard.

The rain soon started to fall as more teams rounded the S-curve above the checkpoint.

The first solo kayak to arrive was Brad Pennington at 10:01 a.m. He pulled into the second dock. Just before his arrival, the first tandem kayak team of “Team Jester,” was pulled on to shore at 9:55 a.m. The first voyageur team, “Boona’s Quest,” arrived at 10:09 a.m.

Just after midnight, after paddling across Lake Laberge, the first team scratched at the Lower Laberge Campground, A Blonde Idea III. Then at 12:16 a.m., SUP

Joanne Hamilton-Vale, the colourful tights wearing paddler, scratched as well.

After calm conditions on Lake Laberge Wednesday, and light showers in the morning, teams will continue to pull into the Carmacks checkpoint for their mandatory seven hours of rest through the afternoon and into the evening. The first teams will set out for the next part of the race and the Five Finger Rapids just downstream before 4 p.m.
