Demchuk scores 22 to lift Warriors over Rams for gold at Yukon Championships

Sammy Demchuk had the game of the night as the Grade 8 F.H. Warriors player scored 22 points and the Warriors defeated the Porter Creek Rams 50-47 to win the Grade 8 Girls Yukon Basketball Championships last week.

Bronze was awarded to the Vanier Crusaders.

In girls Grade 9/10 action, the F.H. Warriors continued the dominating trend, beating the Vanier Crusaders 44-36 for gold. Bronze went to the Teslin Predators.

On the boys’ side, the Vanier Crusaders beat the F.H. Warriors 35- 26 to win the Grade 8 boys division. Sam Wanless led scoring with 13 points for the Crusaders.

In the bronze-medal game, it was all about the Porter Creek Rams, with their red and black teams facing off for the medal.

Red prevailed, winning 46-42 thanks to big games from Hyden Benoit (16 points) and Kaleb Zaliauskas (16 points). Porter Creek Rams Black’s Jaden Hardie was the high-scoring player of the game, with 21 points.

In Grade 9/10 boys action, Vanier Blue bested the F.H. Warriors 51-45 for gold. Vanier’s J.B. Gonzales (13) and F.H.’s Mackenzie Cameron (14) were the game’s high-scorers.

The bronze-medal game saw Porter Creek face Vanier. The Rams bested the basketball superpower 76-59 and Porter Creek’s Haril Oriel had a game-high 15 points.

Senior high school Yukon championship basketball finals take place tonight at Porter Creek Secondary School.

The Grade 11/12 girls gold-medal game kicks off at 6 p.m., while the boys battle for gold at 7:30 p.m.
