Emily Gaw’s entrance into table tennis was one of casual fare.

Yukon Table Tennis president David Stockdale recalls the tryouts for the Arctic Winter Games 2016 team. She was sitting on the stage watching the spread-out tables in the gym and asked her mom, “Think I could try out?”

They made it happen and 13-year-old Gaw represented Yukon at the Arctic Winter Games last March in Nunavut. She came close to the podium, playing for bronze against Nunavut’s Mika Angohiatok. She lost that game 3-2, but has kept working.

That hard work paid off when Gaw and her teammate Katie Crocker, representing Dawson City’s Robert Service School, won the high school girls team event this weekend at the Yukon Championships for table tennis.

In all, eight teams took part in the high school event and Robert Service School dominated the competition, taking home both the boys and girls trophies.

Gaw continued her all-star performance, taking on last year’s women champion and winning the new singles title.

In Saturday’s rookie tournament, Patrick Singh won, while Carmen Dubois was second and Monica Lauer was third.

In the boys 12-14 singles, Joshua Lauer was first, Simon Lauer was second and Max Zimmermans was third.
