Two Yukon cyclists impressed their Alaskan counterparts over the weekend, eventually emerging victorious in their categories at the Tour de Juneau.

Shea Hoffman, 19, finished first in the Sport Men category after top-two finishes in all four races, while Irving, the head coach of the U Kon Echelon cycling club, won the Expert Women division after winning two of her four races.

Bill Curtis finished third in the Sport Men category. Representing VeloNorth, his top finish came in the time trial, where he finished second to Hoffman in a six-man field.

In total, six Yukoners competed, including Irving’s husband, Peter Staley, and children, Johna Irving-Staley and Ava Irving-Staley – the two youngest cyclists on the tour. Each of the Canadians wore cycling kits proudly adorned with the maple leaf.

The tour was held over three days in the Alaska capital, beginning Friday with a two-mile prologue race, where Hoffman and Irving each placed second in their categories.

Saturday included two races – beginning with a four-mile morning hill climb gaining 1,100 feet.

Irving won her class by an entire two minutes, while Hoffman finished second to Alaskan counterpart Doug Woodby by just six seconds.

That afternoon, Hoffman won his 13-mile time trial, while Irving dropped her second race of the series to rival Jamie Bursell.

Irving went on to win Sunday’s road race while Hoffman sped to a tie with Alaskan Andrzej Piotrowski – propelling both Yukoners to their overall tour victories.

As the only competitors in their divisions, Ava Irving-Staley earned the youth girls title, while Peter Staley and son Johna won the tandem division.
