SKIING FOR A CAUSE – Nordic skiers take part in a ski-athon fundraiser in January at Mt. Mac to help purchase snowmaking equipment by Cross Country Yukon.
A Cross Country Yukon campaign to help fund snow-making equipment has exceeded expectations.
A Cross Country Yukon campaign to help fund snow-making equipment has exceeded expectations.
The Make It Snow campaign has raised more than $20,000 for the project.
With these funds and a Community Development Fund that the group is hopeful to receive in the spring, they will be able to purchase the equipment needed to make artificial snow.
Early in the ski season, Cross Country Yukon postponed three races in November and December due to lack of snow.
“Early season snowmaking will address this issue by proving consistency for programming and provide athletes the opportunity to race in November on quality snow in warmer temperatures,” read the first statement released on the project.
The project won’t only benefit racers, said CCY, but will also offer better and more consistent snow to all the nordic trail users.
In addition to local business monetary donations, CCY had held a silent auction at the wax room in January and is doing a coffee fundraiser with Bean North. Those “Make It Snow” beans are available at the wax room and Coast Mountain Sports.
“Snow-making at nordic centres, even in the north, is the new reality due to warming and drier winters,” said CCY in another release. “The Whitehorse ski community knows how important early season snow-making is to ensure a solid base.”
With a successful campaign, CCY hopes to have the snow-making machines firing this fall.
