Bomac Builders Challengers and Davignon Construction Dirty Dingers pull off wins in opening local tournaments

Members of the 2014 North American Indigenous Games softball team showed that their muscles remember how to play as they won the Division 4 Tournament Two in decisive fashion with a 25-7 win over the Write-Offs in the final Sunday afternoon.
Marilyn Lawrence, who coached the team at the 2014 NAIG and plays with their Whitehorse Co-Ed Slo-Pitch League Bomac Builders Challengers iteration, said the kids – now 19 years old – have been playing together for a long time.
“They’re just a good bunch of kids and they really like playing together,” she said.
The team won their first game, but dropped their second and were pushed to the losing bracket.
They proceeded to win every game after that to earn a spot in the final against the Write-Offs, a team that had beat them the week before in league play.
“They were on it,” said Lawrence. “They wanted to win.”
The team is made up of players from Dawson City, Pelly Crossing, Teslin and Whitehorse. They travel in for league and tournament games.
The win was a high note for the players after they lost an athlete in the first game after he got “smacked in the eye.”
After their tournament win, Lawrence said they were “all really, really, happy.”
The other Division 4 Opening Tournament was won by Davignon Construction Dirty Dingers, which beat the Whitehorse Massage Therapy Scrubs 12-10 in the final.
Due to low interest, no Division 1 Opening Tournament was held.
