A Dawson City teen is continuing to set benchmarks in the local running community.

Jack Amos posted a blistering fast 10K time during this year’s Yukon Energy Dempster to Dawson Solstice Race, breaking the previous record set in the race’s first year by five minutes and crossing the finish line along the waterfront five minutes ahead of the second-place finisher.

Well-versed to the stretch of road used for the 10K, Amos was aiming to run a 34-minute 10K. He fell short of his goal, finishing in 36 minutes and 47 seconds.

“I guess I just wasn’t feeling it on the day,” he said.

From the start on the Dempster Highway, he set off at a good pace, but about 5K in, he said it felt like his legs were “filled with cement.”

His splits couldn’t recover in time.

But about 1K out from the finish, he started his finishing kick, a race skill he is well-known for.

This summer Amos is focusing on training for the upcoming track season. His main events are the 3,000 and 1,500.

This 10K was “just a fun thing to do,” he said.

In the race’s first year in 2016, he ran the anchor leg on a relay team.

There were fewer participants in this year’s edition of the race, however it was the same weekend as two other main athletic events: the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay, which was snowed out this year, and the Dustball slo-pitch tournament.

More records were set this year with Keith Maguire claiming the fastest marathon in 3:30:08.

Shailyn Drukis was the first female across the line in 4:49:08.

In the half marathon, Logan Boehmer claimed a new course record in 1:20:55.

Andrea Finner was the top female in 1:44:42.

New this year was a walking half marathon. Bonnie Love and John Storms were the only participants, crossing the line in 2:32:21 and 2:16:37 respectively.

Valerie Bussieres was the top female 10K finisher in 53:12

In the 10K walk, Judy Kelly set a new female course record, finishing in 1:13:58. Lyle Leas was the top male finisher in 1:30:00.

Naoise Dempsey was the fastest runner for the 5K, setting a new course record in 19:58. Betty Burns also set a female course record in 27:39.

The 5K walk was won by Lupin Melnychuk in 49:51. Alisha McLean was the top female in 51:04.
