Yukon athletes found success in the pool at the Canada Summer Games.

The swim team wrapped up competition at the Pan Am Pool in Winnipeg with 13 new Glacier Bears club records.

Alex Petriw, who was named as Team Yukon’s flagbearer for the closing ceremonies, led the team with six club records in the boys age 13-14 category.

He started his meet off with a personal best in the 800m on July 7, setting the club record in nine minutes 42.80 seconds.

“I thought it was good,” Petriw told the Star. “I thought overall it was a great race.”

He followed that up with five more fast swims: 27.35 in 50 free, 1:00.08 in 100 free, 2:12.77 in 200 free, 4:41.65 in 400 free and 18:36.03 in 1,500 free.

Thomas Bakica broke the 400 IM club record for boys 13-14, swimming it in 5:39.14.

Aidan Harvey broke the 200 back club record for boys 15-17, clocking 2:30.11.

Five new club records were also set in the girls relay races.

The relays are new to the club record board, so all the swims were record-setting, said coach Malwina Bukszowana.

A Yukon swimmer also qualified for the finals.

Hannah Kingscote competed in the B-finals twice: in 50 back and 100 butterfly. She was seventh in her final in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:09.06 to finish 15th overall. Kingscote was eighth in her 50 back final with a time of 32.44 to place 16th overall.

In other Team Yukon results, the girl’s volleyball team finished 12th out of 12 teams, the boy’s volleyball team was 11th out of 12 teams and the boy’s soccer team was 10th out of 12 teams.

Yukon’s sole cyclist at the games, David Jackson, competed in his final event, the criterium, over the weekend. He was 43rd.

The canoe/kayak team secured top 10 finishes across the board, but with smaller fields, only one athlete finished ahead of another boat in the races – Emily Crist was seventh in the K1 5,000m.
