Local hockey players will be back on the ice again before they know it.

Following a fine season highlighted by Tier 3 provincial gold won by the Bantam A Mustangs, players will be able to get right back at it via the Yukon Hockey Academy in July.

The three-week hockey school will take place at the Canada Games Centre, with a variety of coaches sharing their expertise.

Former Whitehorse Minor Hockey Association (WMHA) head coach Clint Mylymok will head up week one from July 6 to 10, alongside his twin brother, Jeremy.

The brothers are now affiliated with the Jr. A Notre Dame Hounds in Saskatchewan, and will lead players through speed and agility training.

The University of Alaska Nanooks coaching staff headline week two from July 14 to 18, with a mix of Dallas Ferguson, Lance West, Corbin Schmidt and Kevin Petovello expected to attend to lead an offensive skills session.

B.C. junior coach Dennis Bellavance and hockey co-ordinator Mike Mowat will lead players through week three of the academy from July 20 to 24, teaching power skating with a focus on battling and compete level.

Current WMHA head coach Derek Klassen said while playing summer sports is key to athletic development, so is getting a jump on the fall hockey season.

“In my opinion, it is important to take time off and play other sports,” he said. “But at the same time, to jump on the ice and take advantage of some high-quality coaching is invaluable as well.

“The kids will get a lot of high-end coaching over a short period,” the 28-year-old added. “They’ll get to hear some different perspectives, and it’s nice to have a diverse group of coaches in the mix.”

Klassen said approximately half of the Yukon’s 350 minor hockey players will attend at least one camp in July.

“It’s important for skill development at a young age,” he said, noting that once the season begins, practice sessions rarely focus solely on individual skills.

Players between age eight and 18 are eligible for the camps. Visit www.yukonhockeyacademy.ca for details.

The third annual Yukon Hockey Academy will be followed by the 13th annual Northwestel Summit Hockey School from July 27 to 31.

That camp will feature University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs teammates Brigette Lacquette and Demi Crossman, as well as Joe Martin of the Jr. A Merritt Centennials in B.C.

Lacquette is a blue-liner with the Canadian national team.

Meanwhile, Klassen said he is happy with his first season at the helm of the WMHA coaching staff.

“We had tangible success in the provincial championship,” he said. “We also represented ourselves well at the Canada Games. I’m fairly happy with that performance.”
