‘We’re not going near windows or unlocking doors’

Yukon MP Ryan Leef and Sen. Dan Lang remained under lockdown before press time this afternoon, hours after a gunman was shot and killed at Parliament Hill’s Centre Block in Ottawa.

Police continued to swarm over the downtown in search of other suspects following several other shooting incidents in the capital, including one at the National War Memorial that left a Canadian soldier dead.

“We can say with confidence that he’s fine,” Kay Richter, Leef’s chief of staff, said of the MP.

She noted both Leef and Lang were in the government’s caucus room with more than 200 other Conservative MPs and senators when the shooting occurred.

Leef and Lang remain under lockdown in the caucus room with other national representatives, Lang’s office said in a release.

Richter believed an attempt had been made to move the caucus members out of the main Parliament building, but was not certain.

“When you’re locked down, they don’t tell you anything; they just say, ‘Stay here,’” Richter told the Star.

Four hours after the incident, she had not been in direct communication with Leef. The MP had neglected to charge his cell phone Tuesday night.

“Well, I call that Murphy’s Law,” Richter said, “because that’s the one day that him having a phone would be quite necessary.”

Caucus members are generally not allowed to use their phones during the weekly meetings.

Richter was delivering some paperwork to Leef at around 9 a.m. Ottawa time near the main hallway where, half an hour later, the suspected gunman would be shot and killed.

“I was by the big hallway, where there’s the Library of Parliament at the end, and on one side there’s the national caucus and on the other side is where the Opposition meets.

“And that’s the very hall that the gentleman ran down,” she said of the suspect, reportedly the same man who had fatally shot the soldier at the War Memorial just blocks away.

Kevin Vickers, the House of Commons’ sergeant-at-arms, shot the gunman, according to MPs and parliamentary staff tweeting shortly after the Centre Block’s arched limestone hallway echoed with gunfire.

“You’re aware that you’re a target here,” Richter said.

“It’s sort of in the back of your mind, but when it actually happens, it’s a shock.

“I’ll be having a glass of wine tonight, I can tell you that,” she added.

Richter remained under lockdown in Leef’s office several buildings away from the main Parliament building.

“I’m hiding in my office ... we’re not going near any windows or unlocking doors.”

She spoke with Leef’s family and friends, as well as her own, to reassure them he was all right, though she hadn’t spoken with the MP directly.

“I’m alone,” she said. “All the schools are under lockdown in Ottawa, the hospitals and the embassies. So the whole city is kind of in lockdown.”

Lang’s office put out a statement just after noon: “Thoughts and prayers are with our brave Canadian soldier who was shot while guarding the War Memorial this morning.”

Other northern-based federal politicians are also reported safe.

Dennis Bevington, an NDP MP from the Northwest Territories, was not in the capital this morning.

Premier Darrell Pasloski released a statement on behalf of the territorial government.

“Canadians have worked hard over the decades to build a safe and secure society for all our citizens,” he said.

“An incident such as the one developing today in Ottawa reminds us that we must continue to stand on guard for the freedom that we hold so dear.

“It is also a reminder of why we must support our military and police forces, as they are the ones who put themselves at risk and step forward to protect Canadians in times of crisis.”

The release foreshadowed the motion in support of Canadian troops his government had already planned to table tomorrow, the first day of the legislature’s fall sitting.

“The situation is still developing in Ottawa but in the days ahead, the details of today’s tragic incident will become clearer,” added Pasloski.

“Our government condemns cowardly acts of violence and terror such as the one Ottawa citizens and all Canadians are coping with today. We also stand ready to support our national government in whatever way we can.”

NDP Leader Liz Hanson also released a statement on the violence.

“Shock and great sadness greeted me this morning with the terrible news of shootings on and around Parliament Hill in Ottawa,” she said.

“The thoughts and prayers of our entire caucus are with its residents. We are in deep mourning with the news that a Canadian soldier has succumbed to his gunshot wounds.

“We cannot give enough thanks to the brave first responders from the police services, military and parliamentary security that are bravely rising to the occasion and putting their lives at risk to secure Parliament and the city.

“I share in the grief that comes with the violation of the sacred spaces of our democracy. I know that Canadians will stand together and, once the dust has settled on this terrible incident, rise to the occasion and reclaim them.”

@Enduro Rider. Go Back to sleep the gun registry would not have done anything in this case.

@ I don't like Harpers Canada. So you think we should talk nice to these people and explain who we are. I say you can go try that method and we'll watch the beheading. You can't explain SH%# to these people. What we need to do and I'll say as no one else ever wants to is stop immigration in this country. Stop exporting our jobs to banana republics before we are one. The only problem I see here is bush senior didn't finish the job he started in the first place so if don't want to finish the job then don't start it.

Dear Mr. jw, seems to me you have a lot of time on your hands, perhaps a job or something constructive, rather then trolling websites and spreading your narrow minded views. My father served in WWII and he had no use for these new world politicians that send kids off to kill and be killed. I do not believe that killing people is going to end this.

So, I hope the RCMP can find out where this man got that 30-30 from, He was banned from owning firearms, so its stolen or, someone gave it to him. Would it not be great to have some kind of tool to track stolen, or worse, firearms lent for the purposes of Terrorism?

But all the records are gone now....

What do you think Mr. Leaf, not fun being on the other side of the door, is it. (To clarify, I have, like you, spent most of my professional life having guns aimed in my general direction, all to often it seemed ....). So, a soldier was killed by a religious fanatic by a gun we have no hope in tracing.

Time for some reflection perhaps?

@ don't like Harper's Canada....
First off I'd like to acknowledge that you read more like a partisan troll than a concerned Canadian trying to respectfully state your opinion.
In Canada (not Harper's) we are over ripe with political correctness which is PRECISELY why/how scumbags as the shooter devolve into the descent to madness with no questions being asked and done so easy.
I'd tune you in to where the political correctness that WAS force fed to us humble Canucks came from...but wish not to read/be a partisan troll myself on this week of mourning.
Speaking of being force fed...do you suggest that like minded scum as the shooter are merely suggesting we follow their 7th century values and ideals? Believe me they are not! In the view of scum as he (shooter) there is only one god, one way to live our lives...their way or BOOM!
We should not be sending planes? Why not, would you have felt that way in say Sept of 1939 as ze ovens were being fired up in Europe?
Sometimes one must bring the fight to the door of the very folks who seek your/our absolute destruction be it values or life.
Up to the time of the PC Crusade Canada was a respected and fierce force to be reckoned with, and post PC Crusade we sorta turned into a bunch of whiners and advocates for sticking our head in the poutine ignoring reality.
IMHO we are trying to revisit that Canada and I for one am proud we are bringing it to the savages. I do however agree a tad with you on our foreign policies and the futility of doing so.
Riddle me this, based on your views expressed...say we do not "extract" those resources as you "suggest" we do? Do you support extracting our own resources again be it oil or minerals? Given your moniker I suspect you have a "Save the Peel" sticker on your fossil fuel burning perhaps import...cannot have it both ways despite what your indoctrinators preach to you.
How many heads cut off do you need before you "approve" the lancing of that boil?
Very unfortunate my previous post was so censored as it truly is shameful to read an article as this a day after such history in our capital...with no mention of the fallen soldier Cpl. Nathan Cirillo whilst bleating on about Leef and Lang.

I first off want to acknowledge the innocent person that has lost their life and their family.
We must stop sending soldiers and planes to kill. We need to send people to understand who they are and explain who we are. We need to be peace keepers. We cannot force feed these people to live the way we live, think the way we think and take their resources. That foreign policy will not work anymore, the world is too small.

Very sad day in our Canada indeed.
Yet another example of the dangers that political correctness brings to our shores.
Also more evidence that a bad guy/girl with a gun....can only be neutralized by a good guy/girl with a gun.
R.I.P. Cpl. Nathan Cirillo.

The Federal government had to have known that this was going to happen one day. Whether it was terrorist or tax reform, someone was going to try for them eventually. On the one hand there are so many immigrants in Canada, so many illegals that our security measures can't possibly catch the recruiters. No one wears a sign on their face saying "Beware, I'm a bad guy". On the other hand, latest reports say that Canadians pay more in taxes than on the necessities of life. And, CRA is brutal. When you have enough people at the food banks, too many people without jobs, people don't have a home, trouble follows.

One thing you can be sure of though, Government won't listen to anyone. They will increase their own security. The shooter apparently didn't leave a message, so we don't know a 'why' yet. But, I'd be very surprised if this is the end. To the fallen warriors, Rest in Peace, Canada will take care of your families.

Ms. Richter stated “And that’s the very hall that the gentleman ran down,” she said of the suspect. Ms. Richter, all of the Yukon are so glad that yourself and MP Leef are ok. However, I would like to offer one correction to your politically correct statement to the media. Please do not tarnish the meaning of the word gentleman by using it to refer to this psychotic inhumane terrorist of a beast and pathetic excuse for a male human.
