Whitehorse normally receives 14.8 centimetres of snow in March.

The city has had 19 centimetres since Monday – and more is on the way, says Environment Canada meteorologist Lisa West.

“We have an Arctic front descending from the North and we have a series of disturbances rising up from the South and overriding the Arctic front,” West said in an interview this morning from Kelowna, B.C.

“The combination of the two tend to make them potent, and drop quite a bit of snowfall in the area.”

West said Whitehorse could see another five centimetres today, five tonight and a couple of more heading into Thursday morning before the disturbances from the South are pushed back south by the Arctic front.

The total accumulation so far this month is between 20 and 25 centimetres, she said.

West said recent temperatures have been a little cooler than normal for this time of year – but will become a lot cooler once the Arctic front takes over.

Daytime highs will be in the -7 C range, but nighttime lows could fall to the -20s, she predicted.

Environment Canada’s seven-day forecast for Whitehorse is showing a low of -20 Friday night and -27 Saturday night.

But it’s also showing a daytime temperature of slightly above zero by next Tuesday.
