Once again, Yukoners have shown their generosity, coming through for the local Salvation Army's Christmas fund-raising campaign.

Capt. Jeff Howard said Monday it wasn't clear if the $142,000 it was aiming to raise over the Christmas season for next year's emergency shelter operations would come through in the days just before Christmas.

As of Monday, though, a total $144,000 had been collected, with donations continuing to flow in.

"The community always supports us,” Howard said.

The campaign is made up of two parts – a letter campaign where donations from previous supporters are solicited by mail and the kettle campaign where cash donations are accepted at kettles set up in local shops over the holiday season.

The Salvation Army came up short on its kettle campaign goal, raising a little less than the $72,000 it was looking for there.

The letter campaign, however, made up for it, bringing in more than the $70,000 it had aimed to raise through that, Howard said, noting it all goes to the local emergency shelter.

It means the Salvation Army can continue providing emergency shelter and meals to those in need over the next year.

Howard also noted that the organization accepts donations throughout the year.

Anyone who brought in a donation by last Tuesday can get a tax-deductible receipt for the 2013 tax year.
