Petition against carbon tax, CTF urges Yukoners

In its continued fight against a carbon tax,

By Stephanie Waddell on July 21, 2017

In its continued fight against a carbon tax, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) has launched a petition calling on the Yukon government to scrap planning for the tax.

The federation has been arguing against a carbon tax being imposed across the country.

It’s anticipated the federal government will impose a carbon tax system for provinces and territories that do not develop their own pricing system on carbon.

The CTF has a bumper sticker campaign underway protesting the plan.

It’s been making free stickers stating “No Carbon Tax” available to the public through its website (www.taxpayer.com) along with a series of petitions against the tax directed at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and provincial/territorial governments.

“With potential costs of up to $2,569 per year for the average Canadian family by 2022, the carbon tax will also increase the price of food and clothing,” it’s highlighted on the federation’s website.

“It will mean lost jobs and struggling or bankrupt businesses, but it won’t make a dent in climate change.

“The carbon tax will hit rural Canadians particularly hard, where driving is a necessity.

“Our economy is fragile, and the last thing it needs is yet another tax to make life more difficult for families and businesses.”

In a statement specific to the Yukon, the CTF highlighted Premier Sandy Silver’s comments last year that he would work with the federal government on bringing a carbon tax to the Yukon, though details won’t be available until the fall.

In June, Silver told reporters the Liberal government stands behind its position that carbon pricing can help combat climate change with people and businesses reducing their fuel consumption.

“We still are behind the statement,” Silver said then.

“We do believe that carbon pricing mechanisms are the most effective way of dealing with man-made climate change.”

In an email this morning, Aaron Wudrick, the CTF’s federal director, described the Yukon petition as a “natural evolution” in the fight against the carbon tax.

The federal government did confirm earlier this year the possibility of an exemption to the carbon tax for the territory, but the Yukon government continues to push ahead with plans for the carbon tax, the CTF pointed out.

“The carbon tax will clearly hurt Yukoners more than most,” said Paige MacPherson, the CTF’s Alberta director.

“Driving and heating your home aren’t optional in Yukon. They’re necessities of life – and Yukon taxpayers shouldn’t be punished for that.”

The organization goes on to note a carbon tax could result in higher prices and potential job cuts as the tax is added to anything that is shipped.

“Industrial operations and mining sites will find it harder to compete,” MacPherson said.

“Airplane fuel costs will hurt tourism. Even schools and hospitals will be hard-hit by higher heating and transportation costs.”

A number of provinces have already started pushing back against the federal government plans to impose the tax.

“Yukoners who oppose the carbon tax are not alone in this fight,” Wudrick said.

“Canadians from coast to coast to coast are actively opposing Prime Minister Trudeau’s carbon tax. We started this petition to give Yukoners one way to stand up and be heard.”

Wudrick said he expects when provincial elections come up, the organization will get an even better sense of how the issue is resonating with taxpayers.

The federation also pointed out an Angus-Reid poll released earlier this month shows popular support for the tax is declining.

“Most Canadians agree environmental issues are important, but they’re also worried that carbon taxes won’t achieve much for the environment while having a lot of detrimental consequences to the economy and families’ pocketbooks,” Wudrick said.

The petition and other CTF materials are available through the organization’s website.

Ummm...politico? Seems as though ya beat everyone to the bottom. Not a hate fest, but since you brought up the nazis. Please, if I may...
Ever peruse history? Muslims fought FOR that insane Austrian, seems they have a few things in common...who knew?
Many seems forgotten decades ago, would you say only a small minority of Germans were nazis...so no need to stop them or their ideologies?
For me personally this is more than mere funding of religion.

Since politico you brought up the nazis...figured I'd put my opinion in hopefully a context in which you understand.
Spare the islamaphobia tripe too, my concerns are very rational.
Politico watch stiff upper lip featured on black pigeons YT site, kinda sum it up for me. Seems you need be better aware of current geopolitical goings on, the world is on fire politico.
Yup...I have much to say on this Canadian capitulation craze that has infected so so many.
Back to the CTF...

The erosion of the firewall between religion and state doesn't bother you Politico? I miss the days when progressives were about strong secular government.
The higher tiers of the middle class won't be bothered by the carbon sin tax. Their carbon footprint will remain the same. It is those below that level that will feel the pain.

A barrel of oil is between $36-$42 USD on the market. Somalia is about to come online as a world producer, oil is going to get cheaper. The price of a litre of gas in Haines Junction is $1.21, there is about 85% of that in Tax. I think we are taxed enough on this commodity. As people shut down vast tracts of land containing REM (Rare earth metals) and other Technology related minerals. Eventually people were gonna need those metals for our batteries to store our green energy.
Unless we reduce our need for consumption, and tax to the max out of products from Indian/china and other mass producing greenhouse gas countries. We're wasting our time and efforts and just lying to ourselves.
This is where we are at folks. Just pathetic, our leaders think a tax will fix the environment. Our scientists think this is uncommon for temperatures to fluctuate without our permission. The environment is constantly changing, if you cant exception this. You may begin to pray now for salvation. Don't worry the earth takes care of herself, she will eliminate the virus on her body the same way ours does. By getting a fever and killing the infecting virus.

Canada contributes less then 2% of the worlds GHG emissions. A carbon tax is the most pointless exercise in futility. More then 50% of Canada's population lives in the southern-most area of Ontario and Quebec and yet somehow magically we are all responsible? There will be more CO2 going into the air from the farts of Chinese farmers then their will be from all of Northern Canada combined and yet we STILL need to find a way to make life more difficult for the most vulnerable segments of the population?
I am beginning to believe the masochistic sadists in charge are enjoying creating new ways to impoverish people. And don't even get me started on all the CO2 created from these ministers and their sorties jet-setting around the globe to attend these conferences on tax-payer dime. These illustrious back-patters are unrelenting in their desire to eradicate the middle class and their grotesque cackling as they unfurl new hardships on the already savaged working poor is spiteful and cruel.

I can't wait for the Liberals to use their new slush fund to try and buy more votes. Their recent donation of tax dollars for the building of a Muslim Mosque in downtown Whitehorse is just the latest example.

Clark doesn't get that sea levels are naturally rising as we are still coming out of the last ice age. AGW is speeding it up but coastal cities will have to deal with it either way. Too much alarmist nonsense like that just drives people away from dealing with the issue. Not good.

Not everyone that opposes the carbon sin tax is a Denier. Many of us already have low carbon footprints and simply can't afford it. Money doesn't grow on trees for most of us.

I am sure researchers will find for every scientist that said 'yea another said nay. Personally, i don't buy into doom projections.

The world did not buy into the Paris Accord.. of those that did, very few actually paid
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2017/06/03/one-graphic-ays-it-all-who-actually-paid-in-to-the-paris-green-climate-fund/ President Trump said he would eliminate the handouts, and he at least is keeping a campaign promise. Some countries have refused to reduce their emissions unless the UN, the venue that manages the climate change fund pays through the nose. Kind of an emissions blackmail as it were.. Of the billions of dollars gone to India, India does not have to even start reducing emissions until 2030.

The carbon tax as proposed by Ottawa has everyone paying additional tax on everything, house fuel, gasoline, propane, tires. The people with money don't have to take a bus or ride a bike, they'll still be driving their SUVs and pickups.. the people that can't afford it, SA will pay for it.. they can still turn their heat up when they are cold.. so.. who is hit? Yup..middle class..If you make between $40k and 70k you are going to be very hard hit.. Sandy Silver said there would be no tax in the Yukon..another Liberal liar. For all I know NO politician has a moral compass.

The real reason for this tax? As I believe it to be, (I always speak only for myself) Ottawa is desperate for money. Trudeau spends like a drunken sailor and that money has to come from somewhere.

Carbon tax is just a liberal money grabbing scam period. These liberal think they can use climate change to tax taxes when mother nature takes care of the planet not the liberals. These liberals think they can control the sun and the moon they will wake up in 2019 when they are on the out side looking in wishing they did not lie to Canadians and give away their tax dollars.

In recent months there has been an increase in scientific argument against the CO2 cause of global warming, it is a fraud baked by the Globalists to help promote their agenda. Yet the voice of reason appears to be lost, the one that says let's confirm what the issue is before we rush off in all directions to find a solution. But the governments are still Gung-Ho in using this excuse to steal more money from the working public. To them the science (excuse) is settled- now fork over your carbon taxes. Its a money grab and nothing more.

The current change in sea level is not large at 2 millimeters/year, not at all alarming, nor caused by humans. Information on sea level trends can be found at:

Global weather or climate change has always happened. And Canada is carbon neutral as we have so many trees and land compared to population. This is a cash for new world order and has nothing to do with climate.

Taxing C02 is nothing more than a joke. C02 is plant food and at the lowest level in history and has nothing to do with the weather. This is just a way for governments to create hardship for the population of Canada. If people are concerned about the environment, cleanup the environment! stop dumping sewage into waterways.

A tax will stop man made climate change indeed. With logic like that Silvers doesn't have the qualifications for Premier. Nor politician for that matter. Well, anyway, in 3 years he can join Pat Duncan at Timmys and swap stories on how they couldn't keep the Liberal party in power in Yukon. I think Smiley can start dreaming about visiting 98 other countries as an unemployed tourist in another 2 years as well. And maybe start sending out resumes to some drama schools.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation at last count was made up of 5 people with one goal only to cut tax costs to hell with the costs. So, read them with a grain of salt they don't represent the world.

If sea levels rise another 1/2 inch (which they will) it will mean massive evacuation from coastal areas! You will witness a mass migration, unlike anything you have seen to date.

The carbon tax was approved by literally the world in Paris. Other forms cap and trade prime example is seen to be tax dodges rather than upping the price of carbon. I have worked hard to bring proper reference to climate change to the public. There are two scientific views on the subject; both say we have waited too long! The first and most prominent agree a carbon tax is the best way as we are clearly running out of time. The second group jokingly say more carbon dioxide will help plants grow better.
Here are two links you will find interesting considering the oceans have already risen 3 inches and the Arctic shores are eroding into the ocean because of unprecedented wave action. Photos up on the effects. The more dirt that goes into the Arctic Ocean the quicker it will heat up and no; there is nothing natural about any of this and it hasn't happened before!

Tax Grab on Jul 21, 2017 at 5:41 pm

Just travelling through the northwestern US and have been paying average 68 cents per litre for gas here as compared to $1.11 in Whitehorse last week, and Trudeau wants to tax us to have to pay more. Silver and YTG are all for hosing Yukoners even more with this tax as long as the money goes to them to do with as they see fit. Trudeau and Silver don't seem to get that there is only so much money they can squeeze out of and penalize Canadians by increasing taxes.
By the way, a case of 12 Corona down here is $14 as compared to $32 at the YTG liquor stores, so is less than half what we have to pay up north. That proves we're definitely not taxed enough already up there!
