The Yukon agriculture branch continues to work with a farmer whose wild boars escaped in the Mendenhall subdivision, west of Whitehorse, several weeks ago.

The owner of the boars was told by the agriculture branch to resolve the situation.

This meant the owner had to recapture each of the seven animals or kill them. This had to be done by last Wednesday.

Jesse Devost is the director of communications for the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources.

He confirmed that staff are continuing to work with the owner to make sure the animals are not in the wild.

Following this, he said, the government will determine what type of enforcement actions it will take.

Because this is an ongoing enforcement issue, Devost said, the government cannot provide more detailed information like the timeline or the amount of fines.

As of Monday, the owner had shot one of the animals.

“The agriculture branch continues to work with the owner to come to a quick resolution to this issue,” Devost said.

He said the branch can provide information for the proper fencing needed to contain wild boars.

“It is important that people raising these animals construct adequate fencing, as wild boars are powerful animals and we do not want them to become established in the wild,” Devost said.

He is asking that if anyone has seen any of the escaped animals to contact the agriculture branch.

“Information from the public helps us to keep tabs on animals that may be at risk on the highways and could pose potential health and safety risks to people or wildlife,” he said.

Umm...pink, ya need a moniker change up.
Might I suggest demanda?
What trash talk, I was being inclusive to pigs and a mere query as to why they cannot live amongst us?
Perhaps you are indeed a pigist, and not digging the swine?

Is it talk of diversity that set ya off demanda?
Xenophobic and pigist, or just a regular Josey hater?
Hat trick of emotional baggage perhaps?

Ttthhats all folks.

Ok so you won’t publish my last comment on this article but you’ll keep up Jose Wales trash talk. Ok, either publish both mine and his or neither. By Wednesday if no change we’ll see what the human rights commission has to say about free speech.

I'd like to see Wild Boars make a grand entrance into Yukon mythology. Any writers of imagination out there?

So if I shoot one, can I keep it?

Perhaps I'm a bit OCD, but these are not Wild Boars, they are feral pigs. Boy pigs are called boars while girl pigs are called sows. Adopting the southern hillbilly vocabulary just demonstrates what you may watch on TV.

I , er , guess I misinterpreted the title of the article. I was sure it was about somebody leaving the door to the Whitehorse City Council chamber open by accident.

Hey why the big freak out?
I thought diversity was our strength?
Cannot pigs live amongst us too?

To the best of my knowledge the cannot read, are atheist, truly do “take what they need” ...just pigs about it not greedy.
Never had a pig ask me for spare money downtown...
Never had a pig, or any actual animal tell me to get off their land...
Are there are new folks to the Territory that just are plain pigists, loathing of the swine?

....funny that, as we get called down when one notices foreign predators creeping into our ecosystem.
Should the pigs go or stay? Let us try blindly saying of course it will work...it is after all diversity.
What could possibly happen, be over run by pigs whom proliferated with blind faith?

What potential health and safety risks are we talking about? You can't say that and not elaborate. Swine flu version 5.0???

Seems the boars are smarter than average bears and the COs!

Eliminate these nasty beasts asap. 12 gauge slugs or a big bore 45-70 will do the trick. Cook and enjoy. Ban any and all wild boars in the Yukon.
