Laxton opts not to run

David Laxton,

By Whitehorse Star on October 18, 2016

David Laxton, the former Speaker of the legislature now facing a criminal charge, isn’t a candidate for the Nov. 7 election.

Monday’s 2 p.m. nominations deadline passed without Laxton presenting papers to run again in his riding of Porter Creek Centre.

Laxton resigned from the Yukon Party caucus and as Speaker last spring after a woman alleged he had sexually harassed her in the Yukon Government Main Administration Building.

Through the Yukon Human Rights Commission, both parties said over the summer the matter had been settled, but Laxton was later charged with one count of sexual assault. The case remains before the courts.

Laxton had mused in media interviews over the summer about potentially running again independently in the coming election, but has opted not to.

Two other candidates in other ridings registered before Monday’s deadline.

Skeeter Wright, a Whitehorse resident, is now the New Democrats’ candidate in Vuntut Gwitchin, giving the party a full slate and taking on Darius Elias, who represents the riding for the Yukon Party, and Liberal Pauline Frost.

Meanwhile, Victor Kisoun is running as an independent in Watson Lake, which is represented by the Yukon Party’s Patti McLeod, now the Speaker of the legislature.

Ernie Jamieson is the Liberal candidate there, while Erin Labonte is contesting the riding for the NDP.

Finally, Elvis Presley, who had said earlier this year he would run independently in rural Yukon, has not registered as a candidate.

@PSG….It is very difficult to not allow candidates to move around. Some ridings have very low populations and most qualified potential candidates already have jobs. So easy to say no Parachuting but with out it some of us would have no representation.

@ProScience Greeny They can't all live in the riding they represent...Pelly Nisutlin
riding is composed of Teslin, Ross River and Faro. Dis-jointed to say the least, but that is the way it is.

Barry Smith: Yeah..I think Doug Graham is all about greed and personal interest. I will never forget a few years ago standing in front of the Food Bank while Graham cruised by in a Jag. He's gotten pretty fat financially off the taxpayer's back and produced nothing in return. Not from his time on City council, nor his stints at Territorial leg. I, for one, will be very happy to see his sorry *ss out of politics.

Chris - I live in Whitehorse Center
Doug Graham is a parachute candidate who tried to retire and then deserted his old riding
We want and deserve something better than this tired, old political hack.
and BTW - he has done NO campaigning here so far - in it for the severance package for sure

This was sorted out this summer. They did mediation and were both happy with the outcome with the Human Rights Commission. They must have signed an agreement. How on earth did this get into the courts?
This seems to be an unfair hunt after David for some reason!!!!!! Why do they not want him to be back into politics?

Gordon they are MLA's not MP's. As well Doug Graham won 50% of the vote in the last election. Why are you so sure he can't win?

First thing we need to do after this election is put in place legislation to ensure that a candidate actually lives in the riding they run in so we can put an end to this flaky and undemocratic parachute candidate thing. All the candidates jumping around like that should be ashamed of themselves.

Laxton is a sitting Yukon MP is he not ?
If he ran as an independent and lost he'd get the huge "defeated MP severance package" would he not ?
SO - he may actually have some integrity by not running ?
Unlike Doug Graham who obviously unretired to run in a riding he can't win just for this big payout.
