A single-vehicle collision left one person dead 10 kilometres east of Haines Junction on Wednesday morning.

According to an RCMP press release, the accident took place at 7 a.m., and the vehicle was a private ambulance.

It was from a Department of Highways and Public Works worksite, police said.

The accident affected traffic flow on the Alaska Highway from 7 a.m. to noon. The highway was reduced to one lane during that time.

Police found the driver dead at the scene. They said the driver was the sole occupant.

Police have not released the name of the deceased nor any details about the accident.

A Yukon RCMP collision reconstructionist investigated the scene, assisted by Highways and Public Works staff.

Police said they are considering that the ambulance was stolen.

They are making this assumption because they could not find any connection between the deceased and the vehicle prior to the accident.

Police say more information about the fatal incident will be released when it’s available.
