The Robert Campbell Highway has been closed because of a washed-out culvert between Watson Lake and Ross River.

Government spokesman Ben Horowitz of the Department of Highways and Public Works said early this afternoon crews are still assessing the washout but expect repairs will take at least a few days.

The washout occurred 250 kilometres north of Watson Lake and 110 kilometres south of Ross River, he said.

“We have crews out there this morning not just assessing the washout but also what it is going to take to mobilize the equipment and get the road re-opened,” he said.

“They are estimating it will be a few days before it re-opens.”

Horowitz said the area in general has had a substantial amount of rainfall over the last week. The culvert where the washout occurred had been plugged by beavers, he said.

Horowitz said he’s not yet received a description of the extent of the washout, and exactly when it occurred.

It was noticed last night, he said.
