A helicopter crash in Atlin, B.C. is now being investigated by a federal agency.

The helicopter crashed last Thursday afternoon as it was taking off from the Atlin airport.

According to Atlin RCMP detachment commander Cpl. Steve Woodcox, there was severe damage to the aircraft as a result of the incident.

The pilot, who was the only person in the helicopter at the time, sustained minor injuries.

Police have not released the name of the male pilot, who is from Vanderhoof, B.C.

Woodcox said it appeared that as the pilot was trying to lift off, the left side of the helicopter began to sink.

He then attempted to correct the issue, but the helicopter turned right and flipped.

The crash completely ripped off the rotor blades of the helicopter.

As well, there was damage to the right side of the aircraft where it landed, Woodcox noted.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada, an independent agency, says they will not being doing a full investigation into the incident. But information on the crash will be used for statistical purposes.

The cause of the crash is unknown.
