Guns swiped from government building

Whitehorse RCMP are looking for four shotguns stolen from a Yukon government building on Quartz Road.

By Whitehorse Star on April 28, 2016

Whitehorse RCMP are looking for four shotguns stolen from a Yukon government building on Quartz Road.

The theft happened between April 8 and April 12, the force said early this afternoon.

A theft of cash was reported on April 12.

It was only a week later that government workers realized the four shotguns were missing.

The firearms are all Remington 870 shotguns.

Yukon government officials from various departments declined to comment this afternoon, citing the ongoing investigation.

Neither police nor the government specified what building it was taken from, nor why it took so long for staff to realize the weapons were gone.

Anybody with information is asked to contact Whitehorse RCMP at 667-5555.

I like the comment Josey made agreeing with Josey...

But I hate to say it, I agree with you as well. If I was in the same boat with my firearms, I'd be losing them.

If I couldn't account for my firearms I would be arrested......maybe these guns were locked up, who knows, but that's even more concerning that they left the safe open or the keys available for some opportunist.....the very people who are supposed to enforce laws!
But we know it's no ones fault

Haha...everyone here seems to assume that the guns were left in the corner of the lobby or something....You, nor I know where or how they were stored. If they were in a safe perhaps it could be a ex-employee who had the combo or something...lots of options here...not all of them are as a result of human error or carelessness.
I have firearms...mine are locked up with a trigger lock and in a safe....But I don't check on them morning, noon and night....it would be a month or two before I noticed they were missing as long as nothing was broken....I would think many of you would be the same....so let's not throw stones.

People are human and mistakes are made, but maybe a lesson can be learned & firearm storage/inventory could be monitored on a daily basis especially after knowledge that cash has been stolen.
You are correct Josey in saying "Thieving nefarious scumbags are now Omni-present in this new sty." I am becoming tired of this new Whitehorse. Don't tell me to move; not saying that new comers are to blame, but the long term residents are not the perpetrators. Crime happens everywhere, but 40+ years ago no one felt the need to lock their house doors; now we have groups touring around flipping door handles, looking for unlocked vehicles & scoop whatever. If that isn't profitable they simply B & E whether it is a vehicle, residence or business. What has happened to this peaceful community that many of us loved living in & chose to make our home? I suspect youths are responsible for much of these theft occurrences, but how did they end up like this?

If I noticed cash stolen from my house first thing I'm going to do is check and see if the guns are where they belong, how is it that it was not noticed for a week! Does anyone do their job in these buildings? Serious question!

Josey, how you managed to blame this on the union workers is beyond me. Of course you couldn't blame it on the right wing politicians who appoint the managers there and oversee the workers. In your right wing nut world it's always the workers who are at fault not the bosses. Amazing.

I agree with the other Josey on
"The firearms are all Remington 870 shotguns."
Smart thief/thieves very dependable shotgun.

The guns could have been in a secure locker that is tucked away in a corner thus it may not be anyone's FAULT THAT THE LOCKER WAS NOT CHECKED FOR A FEW DAYS. It's so easy for some people to go after government people that it makes me wonder about an undercurrent of hostility towards them.

Or maybe they were stored properly in a safe and no one looked in it. You guys are certainly jumping, nay leaping to conclusions here.

It took that long for everyone involved (YG and RCMP) to realize they couldn't keep it in house any longer.

Good damn thing no one is ever ever "responsible" for their actions in a union government atmosphere.
Seems odd they would not be stored in a safe, a locked one even?
I say that with a presumption of the overlords of liability often go over the top with zealot like safety also having a reputation of spending huge wads on shite unneeded....would not by default have a swank "Remington" or groovy big ass safe.
Ya know so guns which have many uses heaps of which rock...will "not" easily fall into the hands of scumbags with nefarious intent.
Thieving nefarious scumbags are now Omni-present in this new sty.
yup...act accordingly!

OK grammar really does suck, I know...but the point?

Which department of the Yukon Government stored and did not miss firearms?
We as tax payers have the right to know which department is not aware of procedures and have carelessly lost firearms.

If that was me I bet I would be charged with improper storage and a failure to notify authorities immediately. Oh yeah. Government can have guns not me RIGHT.

Hmm... "between April 8 and April 12"... "it was only a week later that government workers realized the four shotguns were missing".
Leads one to question if the shotguns were securely stored and accounted for as is required for everyone else.
